Still unfancied... Staying Under the Radar

Postby Gruff » Sun Mar 03, 2024 1:39 pm

I'm not sure where this love-in for Stockport and MK is coming from. Both are off the boil, and we're 3 points clear at the top. If we beat MK on Tuesday, then surely they will struggle to catch us.

Happy with being thenunderdog, but am I missing something?

I struggle to post tweets as well. What's the trick?

We could have won the league by 10 points, have gone on our Summer holidays and there’d still be people out there going ‘I still think Mansfield will fall away’

It’s about now where a team comes into form and makes a strong run for the title but it’s not happened so far…….unless that team is us of course.

It's just playing to the crowd nonsense. He's replying to a Wrexham supporters club twitter feed so of course he thinks Wrexham will come out top. Then to say MK can threaten Mansfield because of their 'style' is absolute tosh. I'd be interested to know if he can expand on that claptrap. If anything, a team like Mansfield who know how to grind out wins and draws are much more likely to get over the line at the business end of the season than a bunch a stylistic Prima Donna's like MK (or County). He doesn't mention Mansfield or Crewe because we are both unfashionable with small fanbases.

Stockport are the team in trouble! They’ve not played well for a long time and picked up a small amount of points compared to any of the other top 5 clubs.

I usually quite like Nixon but he's talking nonsense here.

Over the last 6 games we've got 9 points more than Stockport, 5 more than MK Dons and 4 more than Wrexham.

We're the ones hitting a good patch and I don't see MK Dons closing that gap on Tuesday.

It is a nonsense and has no basis in any fact; no team in the division has gained more than 3 points on us in the last 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 games. And for the last 4 of those we are the actual form team.

If some random bloke thinks that great, he’s clearly not done any research.

We’re not in september and on a lucky run.

2nd most goals in the league
best defence in the league
best GD in the league
best away record in the league
top of the league
2nd in the form table
unbeaten against wrexham stockport and MK (fair dues only played 3)

But yeah, mansfield will slip away

We are unfashionable always have been. We are disliked by TV and media alike, nobody wants to watch us or read about us. Sad but true. I can live with us proving these muppets wrong. Should we win the league it will be as a sideshow to shexy Wrexham getting automatic promotion.

It's stupid from the actual, factual point of view of what's happening on the pitch, but it also doesn't make sense from the sort of narratives these people like to sell.

The obvious narratives are that Stockport and MK are pretty much doing what they should be doing considering budgets and where they were last season. Crewe are the plucky underdogs surprising everyone.
Wrexham are doing quite well considering its their first year back, money doesn't buy success, just look at Notts etc etc. And Stags are finally doing what we've been threatening to do for about 7 years.

The problem is that they got it so wrong pre season, now they're flapping about trying to figure out how to tell their story. If they'd just given a bit of credit to the business we had done the last 2 windows, and kept it in their pants when Ryan Reynolds popped up on twitter, they wouldn't have to say such stupid stuff now.

There's no objective way to look at the table, form, fixtures and squads and say we're anything other than massive favourites from here on.

In fairness we’ve been picked for tv against colchester and i can’t imagine it’s because of colchester, but yeah i get your point in general, we’ve never been the “fashionable” club. Good

He has been questioned on it (by Bellwhiff I believe), and it seems the driving force behind Nixon's opinion is petty bitterness. We let him down on promotion bets for the last couple of seasons.

Stockport are the ones who are going to crumble if anyone. If you take away their fantastic winning run, in the other games they picked up 27 points in 22 games. An average of around 56 points a season. Proper lower mid table stuff.

Sky sports news on Saturday are another point in case, briefly commented that 'Mansfield won and remain top'. before moving on to talk about Wrexham for the next 30 seconds or so fawning over their 4-0 win and tremendous run of form etc etc.
