Hands up - did anybody have confidence in that starting 11

Postby stag324 » Tue Feb 13, 2024 10:12 pm

I know me and my mates were dreading the game before kick off when we saw the team.

That’s why Nigel gets paid to do that and we don’t

I did.

Was pleasantly surprised to see Boateng starting and certainly didn't see the scoreline coming but I think by now we've proven any 11 we put out as a starting line up can beat the best this league has to offer.

I posted on here that Boeteng’s cameos have bee positive of late and a couple quoted me to say he is “crap” and he should of gone.

The lad had a chance to leave; wanted to stay; gets his chance and throughly took it, we knew he had that performance in him (he was good at the end of last season) he just needs tjay consistency now.

Well done Hiram.

Despite the result, I think Lee Gregory would have made a difference. Just imagine how many we would have scored with him playing in the last 2 games..... Sort it out Cloughie !!!! ;)

We are going to have to get used to see different starting elevens now, so much talent in this squad I’d say outside of Flint, Pym and Bowery most will be rotated at some stage. What a wonderful position to be in. Huge credit to everyone that came in tonight, all looked hungry and like they’d never been away from the first eleven.

Fair play to the lad, I was not confident with him starting. More than happy to be proved wrong. His best performance in a Stags shirt! COYS!!

I worried we wouldn't have the right levels of aggression in midfield. We negated any risk by simply not getting sucked into a scrap & playing them off the park.

I'm sure considering the pitch & the weather most of us were expecting a hoofy sort of game, but some of the football we played was sublime.
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.

It was a bit of a shock. Swan not starting was my main gripe, what more does he have to do? We have a strong squad and most are more than capable.

Tonight was fantastic, pleased for Boateng, guaranteed to be benched on Saturday though you'd think, unbelievably.

Very suprised but clough had been hinting rotation and non weakening of team all week

I think it's because we're used a pretty settled side

The midfielder who scored 2 on Saturday was rested and that hasn’t turned out to bad

Was undecided whether to come as I thought it may be called off last minute but wow that will live in the memory a long time I also remember the QPR 8-1 and Hounslow 9-2

Can't remember a stronger bench than the one we had today and when they all came on it showed as bar that mental couple of minutes we were just as good, if not better. Whilst I was surprised Boateng started, he has looked much fitter of late and has done well when coming off the bench, it's given Clough a bit of a selection dilemma for Saturday, a nice problem to have.

The biggest win for me is boateng.

Let’s be honest, whereas he’s been decent coming on as a sub he’s flattered to deceive when he’s started in the past and folk were nervous, especially given our recent hoodoo against harrogate.

For him to play as he did (on the back of swan getting 2 more) is like having 2 new players in the ranks.

I am fuming we didn’t score ten.

So was Martin. For the last five minutes when we were playing keepball he was urging them to get it forward so we could score again

You’d think after Stockport away people would have a little faith in the team Clough picks by now

I had confidence. Boeateng has more than earned his chance in his cameos. Expected rotation. A little surprised Swan and Williams were dropped. The others rotation.

Said all season we have quality throughout the squad and have a starting XI (IE best) capable of smashing the league and a whole different second XI that would get in the play offs. Said in pre season we don't need to change the attack at all just need quite a few defensive signings to properly challenge. We signed new defenders and they are all an improvement (or very very close to) on what we already had.

Unless we suddenly get injuries like the other season we will go up.

Interesting to hear in Clough's interview that Boateng nearly left in the transfer window.

My reaction to changes like last night is always wondering what Gary Crosby and Simon Clough have seen in their scouting trips.

Good point, there's been a few surprises this season where we've changed it unexpectedly and it's worked out wonderfully. Musings made a point about how we grabbed the ball and ran it back for kickoff after the penalty, like they knew there were goals in the game

perhaps the January blues were due to a lack of rotation when it needed it? I know injuries were an issue so not necessarily a pop at anyone.
