Louis Reed (Peterborough), Darnell Johnson (Leicester City), Owen Bailey (Newcastle), Aidan Barlow (Manchester United), Aramide Oteh (QPR-on loan at Stevenage and Col U last season), Tunji Akinola (West Ham-on loan at Orient last season) and Charlie Colkett (Ostasund, Chelsea) all played for Donny Rovers as trialists in their 2-0 defeat at Bradford City. The only one Richie Wellens rated was centre half Darnell Johnson who he described as "outstanding". Tunji Akinola was given a hard time by Andy Cook and was subbed at half time. Andy Cook scored the 2nd goal for Bradford after a Abo Eisa penalty.

Wellens: "Some of the trialists were way off it. The first half, all the problems came from the right side of our back four. Tunji [Akinola] and Owen [Bailey] are just starting out in their careers and Cook is an experienced centre forward and he just peeled off onto that side. We know if Kyle Knoyle and Ro-Shaun Williams are there, then it’s not going to happen."

Dan Gardner (Wigan) has been training with Donny and warmed up with them but decided not to play after Wellens said he could not afford to offer him a contract.

Wellens said: “He was here doing some fitness work. It’s quite a predicament to be in when you’re on trial and you want a contract. If the contract isn’t there at the moment, do you play and risk getting injured? I get it but at the moment our budget does not stretch to bringing that calibre of player in.”

Donny also played the following trialists who were not named - a striker who came through the academy of a top Premier League club and featured for their U21 side in the EFL Trophy before joining another top flight outfit whom he left earlier this year, a towering centre back from France who spent two years in the U23 set up of a Premier League club and a forward who was a regular goalscorer for a Championship side’s U23 group until his release in May.

Wellens has also transfer listed midfield player Ed Williams who they signed on a 2 year contract from Kiddy last season.

I don’t think so no. He was on loan at Kettering but I think at some point that must have turned permanent as he was announced as released by them a month or so ago.

Just reading the NPL. Stockport County are certainly splashing the cash. £250,000 for Paddy Madden from Fleetwood and £150,000 for Scott Quigley from Barrow. Apparently Quigley had a release clause for that amount in his contract.
