Clough explained afterwards that "Mal Benning wasn't in the 18 so we could include Jaden Charles and James Clarke. We want to get the youngsters involved between now and the end of the season."

Think that may mean we've seen the last of Mal, unless he's contracted.

7 subs on the bench, 5 used, but the two that weren’t used were the two young full backs??

With Quinn and Maris taking knocks and Rawson pretty much done for the season then it makes the defence interesting.

Mclaughlin will likely play DMC, Perch at CB, J.Clarke/Gordon at RB. Charles/Benning at LB (depends on whether he wants to start them both, 1 or both come on from the bench.

It'll be interesting. Plus with a week between the games those that took knocks could recover so all that may be irrelevant.

Benning was in good form before disappearing, so if he's not injured I'm not sure why he's not in the squad. It's tempting to think that he's unhappy with Clough dropping him and has refused to cooperate, but I don't remember him being prone to histrionics.
He's not perfect, but works hard and does his job well. Even if out of favour I'd expect him to be in the squad.

I think it’s as Nigel says - he had to leave someone off the bench to make way

The reality is if we are to create space for new signings all those out of contract are potentially vulnerable - and that obviously includes Mal. It’s not always about could someone do a job , the issue is really whether or not the manager thinks he could do better.

I think it will be a v interesting close season with tough negotiations and decisions.

Mal has recently got married. His wife ptobably wanted him to take her round IKEA for some new flat pack furniture. It's a nightmare trying to get those packs into the back of the car on your own

Bit gutting to be honest, I think it was always going to be because of how good a player he has been for us. I do think its right for both parties though and I am sure he will go on to have a good career.

I appreciate that we have made a special announcement for this and its annoying he wont get the applause that he deserves from us.

Good luck Mal

Sad to see him go, he has been a great servant and scored some amazing goals, but he's not been the same player since his first 2 seasons.
Great to have a Sikh player on our books too.
All the best Mal, hope you have a great career elsewhere.

He has been a great servant for the club. Will always remember his goal against Cheaterfield.

I think it's the right decision. I wish him well for his future.

Thanks Sir Mal.

I genuinely believe this suits both parties.

I would think Mal has a club sorted. Thanks for the memories Mal and good luck in whatever you do next

One of the best left backs the club has had, will follow his career and wish him all the best in what comes next

Fresh start will do him good, someone is about to get one hell of a player

Edit: Someones just said he's probably going to port vale... near his home in Birmingham so makes sense!
