World record distance for goal

Postby HarryW » Thu Jan 21, 2021 8:40 pm

Following Tom King's 105-yard record goal-kick goal, I seem to recall a very long-distance goal being
scored against Stags by a keeper in open play (just outside his goal area) some years ago. Am I imagining it?

Not as long a distance but I remember Ian Baraclough scoring against us from around the half way line, and of course that goal against Rotherham in the relegation season.

Any keeper beaten by another keeper hitting t'ball from their own box ought to hang up their gloves.

I remember Pilks getting beaten by a free kick taken by the Notts keeper from his own half. Pretty sure it was a cup game.

Baraclough wasn't a keeper though. Mildenhall?

No don't think it was Barraclough. Sure it was their keeper.

the Baraclough goal was FOR us, against Hereford in a 7-1 win
There was no TV camera, it was Boxing Day and the cameraman didn't turn up. Quite a shame really.

21/08/01: League Cup 1st Round - Mansfield Town 3 Notts County 4

Martin's Report

"After Greenacre had scored a good first goal, firing under the County keeper via a very slight deflection, following an incisive through-ball from Bobby Hassell, there followed some of the worst defending seen by Mansfield for a long time. County’s first 2 goals, by Danny Allsop, both had a suspicion of offside, (a fact which later seemed to be confirmed by the video evidence) but nevertheless the defending was awful on each occasion. But this was nothing compared to what happened next. First, Les Robinson, who had been guilty of giving the ball away in dangerous areas on Saturday, did not learn his lesson and was caught in possession trying the dribble the ball in his own half, to concede a pathetic goal, again scored by Allsop. Then it got even worse, as Mildenhall, the County keeper, took a free kick from fully 85 yards out from the Stags goal. The ball flew straight into the Stags area, but defenders, attackers and Pilkington all went up for the ball and all missed it, with the ball sailing into the open net. Slapstick from Pilkington which simply cannot continue. After Stags fans were treated to a season of solid goalkeeping from Bobby Mimms last year, following the regular howlers by Ian Bowling, and others, we need better from the former Manchester United keeper."

Sorry yes getting my names mixed up. I did mean Mildenhall. I was only 9 at the time

I think Baraclough’s name came into my head because he was playing for County and remember my Dad saying he used to play for Stags.

Having reffed a bit a few years ago I had to check the laws. I thought you could not score direct from a goal kick but I was incorrect.

However you cannot score an own goal direct from a goal kick. Guess this is possible with a strong wind.

The other odd thing in the laws is that you can score direct from a corner but only into the opponents goal. It would be a cracking og if it went into the other goal from a corner!

I remember the Barraclough goal. I used to stand near the dug out and they were telling him to go for it. Also memorable for the debut of O'neil Donaldson who scored 2 goals.

It was a couple of weeks of a goal fest. The day after the Hereford game was a 5-2 win at Scarborough, then a 3-0 win over Barnet and a 2-3 defeat to Wolves in the FA cup.

What a run!

This was followed by a 2-0 win away at Donny and a 4-3 win over Wigan at home.

32 goals in 6 matches.

Like you I've reffed a long time and the Man City goal v Villa was the worst decision I have ever seen, compounded by idiot referees supporting it. Did he gain an advantage from being in an offside position, yes he set up a goal, it is really flipping simple. Morons.

The Man City goal was no different in my view to when a shot is saved by a goalkeeper and rebounds to an attacker who was offside when the shot was originally made.

VAR and everyone else who have no doubt he was offside.

It used to be this simple for an offside, ‘Is the player gaining or seeking to gain an advantage’. ‘Wait and see’ aided this though 2-3 seconds is long enough as that is a long time in football.

Trouble is, people who have never ‘ran a line’, which is an art form in itself, hold sway over its wording and implementation. If offside was as easy as the pundits / talking heads state there would not be a need for clubs to press gang substitutes into doing it at grass roots level.
