As far as I understand, it means the club can have teams down to U9’s, whereas previously they could only have teams from U17s upwards.

As the category number increases, I think the ratio of coaches required per number of places increases, and the number of hours coaching each player receives increases. It also allows the recruitment of youth players to be more widespread, the higher the category you achieve.

That’s just from some basic research, so I’m happy to be corrected.

be interesting to see the balance of investment & time v outcomes, i suspect JR will have set a timeline on returns too.

i’m sure we know what we are doing, just out of interest anyone know how many other League Two clubs have Category 3 Academies ?

Most of them, it is easier to ask who isn’t. At the end of 2017/8 season 17 out of the 24 League Two clubs were at least category three.

Yes, it’s fair to say that this is massive progress for the club, but it only puts us in line with most other clubs, rather than sets us apart.

umm interesting, would have thought most wouldn’t have unless ofcourse it’s externally funded or at least the majority is, anyone know ?

in the age of cost cutting it’s surprising in league two most are keeping going don’t you think ?

Not particularly. Although people seem shocked that others were Cat 3 long before us.

But it’s an investment for clubs, a few half decent players sold every few years will make it a profit and it’s cheaper than continually buying in players

Absolutely agree, however “a few half decent players sold every few years”, is that realistic ?
