HT: Grimsby Town 2 Newport County 1
Very open and entertaining game. Grimsby went ahead after 49 seconds when Elliott Whitehouse played a great ball down the left to Charles Vernam who cut inside on to his right foot and shot at goal. Tom King fumbled the shot and left back, Bradley Garmston, followed up to score. Newport nearly equalised after 3 minutes when good play by Jordan Green allowed Robbie Wilmott playing at right back to put a cross in but Jamille Matt just could not get a touch on the cross to score. Newport did equalise after 10 minutes when George Nurse played a great curling ball into the area from the left which Jamille Matt missed again but the ball rolled past him and James McKeown in the Grimsby goal for Jordan Green to tap into an empty net. Josh Benson hit the bar for Grimsby with a shot from outside the area. Jamille Matt then shot over the bar from close range but it looked like his shot was deflected over.

Grimsby broke forward quickly on 40 minutes and Ryan Innis had to bring down Charles Vernam for a professional foul on the edge of the area. Josh Benson (20) on loan from Burnley took the free kick and curled it in at the near post.

Charles Vernam has been Grimsby's best player up front and has had a lot of joy on the left against Robbie Wilmott. Josh Benson has looked good in midfield. Dale Gorman has played well in midfield for Newport and Jordan Green has looked lively up front. Jamille Matt has also held the ball up well and is giving Luke Waterfall a good battle.

Otis Khan has had little impact on the game so far. He won a ball well early on but then gave the ball away on his next three touches before playing a decent ball to left back, George Nurse, just before half time who shot wide.

a distinct possibility that only three will go down. So Ebbsfleet winning would just put a bit more pressure on Chesterfield

off topic but what's happened to Fylde? in the relegation places, weren't they pushing for promotion last year? or was it the year before. I thought they had a loaded chairman

FT: Grimsby Town 4 Newport County 2

Newport will be disappointed that they did not get anything out of this game. They seemed to dominate possession (although the stats say they only had 49% possession) and created more clear cut chances but Grimsby were just more clinical in front of goal and scored 4 goals from about 6 attempts on goal. I would also question Michael Flynn's substitutions as he subbed Jamille Matt at half time who was playing well and held the ball up front a lot better than Tristan Abrahams who came on as a sub after 71 minutes. He also subbed Jordan Green who who had scored and been much more of a threat than Otis Khan although Otis did have a very good chance to score in the 79th minute.

The 2nd half started with a double substitution for Newport with Joss Labadie coming on for Ryan Inniss with Scott Bennett dropping back to centre half. Padraig Amond also came on for Jamille Matt who had played well in the 1st half but with whom Flynn was not happy for missing a few chances. Both Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt were former Grimsby players. Otis Khan switched from playing on the left to the right.

The half started with Jordan Green shooting narrowly wide. Josh Sheehan made a good start to the 2nd half in centre midfield. Joss Labadie also had a shot which was well saved. Grimsby then made it 3-1 after 61 minutes with their first attack of the 2nd half. James Tilly's shot on the edge of the area was blocked and it looped up in the air for James Hanson to score with a left foot half volley into the corner of the net. Newport made it 3-2 from a long throw from Micky Demetriou which fell to Dale Gorman on the edge of the area. His shot was pushed out by James McKeown to Padraig Amond who smashed the ball home. Tristan Abrahams came on for Jordan Green after 71 minutes and Otis Khan moved to the left. Otis should then have equalised on 79 minutes after a good one two with Josh Sheehan put him clean through on goal but James McKeown made a good save with his legs. 5 minutes later, Grimsby sub, Max Wright, tried a shot from the edge of the area which took a deflection and looped over Tom King to make it 4-2 to the Mariners. Grimsby then got on top towards the end as Newport chucked players forward and James Tilly (21) on loan from Brighton cut dribbled in on goal from the left but Tom King made a good save.

There was only 1 corner in the whole game.

Well done to to the 33 Newport fans in the crowd of 3,578 who made the 484 round trip from South Wales.

I also did not know that Grimsby's young 18 year old centre half, Matty Pollock, was the son of former Middlesbrough, Bolton and Man City midfield player, Jamie Pollock.

Man of the Match:
Grimsby Town: Josh Benson and Charles Vernam
Newport County: Dale Gorman and George Nurse

if you watch the Vanarama National League highlights I posted on another thread, the pundits speculate that it's the hangover of missing out on the play-offs last season

Just listened to Ian Holloway's post match interview. Matt Green and Ludwig Ohman were both due to start against Newport County but were fined and dropped to the bench for arriving 5 minutes late.

Matt Green came on as a 59th minute sub for Elliott Whitehouse. Grimsby then scored to make it 3-1 in the 61st minute. Matt Green ran about a bit and pressed up front but he did not get much service.
