FT: Grimsby Town 4 Newport County 2
Newport will be disappointed that they did not get anything out of this game. They seemed to dominate possession (although the stats say they only had 49% possession) and created more clear cut chances but Grimsby were just more clinical in front of goal and scored 4 goals from about 6 attempts on goal. I would also question Michael Flynn's substitutions as he subbed Jamille Matt at half time who was playing well and held the ball up front a lot better than Tristan Abrahams who came on as a sub after 71 minutes. He also subbed Jordan Green who who had scored and been much more of a threat than Otis Khan although Otis did have a very good chance to score in the 79th minute.
The 2nd half started with a double substitution for Newport with Joss Labadie coming on for Ryan Inniss with Scott Bennett dropping back to centre half. Padraig Amond also came on for Jamille Matt who had played well in the 1st half but with whom Flynn was not happy for missing a few chances. Both Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt were former Grimsby players. Otis Khan switched from playing on the left to the right.
The half started with Jordan Green shooting narrowly wide. Josh Sheehan made a good start to the 2nd half in centre midfield. Joss Labadie also had a shot which was well saved. Grimsby then made it 3-1 after 61 minutes with their first attack of the 2nd half. James Tilly's shot on the edge of the area was blocked and it looped up in the air for James Hanson to score with a left foot half volley into the corner of the net. Newport made it 3-2 from a long throw from Micky Demetriou which fell to Dale Gorman on the edge of the area. His shot was pushed out by James McKeown to Padraig Amond who smashed the ball home. Tristan Abrahams came on for Jordan Green after 71 minutes and Otis Khan moved to the left. Otis should then have equalised on 79 minutes after a good one two with Josh Sheehan put him clean through on goal but James McKeown made a good save with his legs. 5 minutes later, Grimsby sub, Max Wright, tried a shot from the edge of the area which took a deflection and looped over Tom King to make it 4-2 to the Mariners. Grimsby then got on top towards the end as Newport chucked players forward and James Tilly (21) on loan from Brighton cut dribbled in on goal from the left but Tom King made a good save.
There was only 1 corner in the whole game.
Well done to to the 33 Newport fans in the crowd of 3,578 who made the 484 round trip from South Wales.
I also did not know that Grimsby's young 18 year old centre half, Matty Pollock, was the son of former Middlesbrough, Bolton and Man City midfield player, Jamie Pollock.
Man of the Match:
Grimsby Town: Josh Benson and Charles Vernam
Newport County: Dale Gorman and George Nurse
