Frank Wignall
Johnny Miller
John Matthews
Steve Whitworth
Barry Daines
Emlyn Hughes (pre season friendlies - but still looked good though)
Tony Lormor
Scott Sellars
Mark Stallard

... all good players in their day (apart from Barry Daines), but all well past their peak by the time they came to us.

And Peter Morris was a 'washed up' signing as a player, but give him his due - he was a successful player/manager.

Ian Greaves signed a few: (Whatmore, Whitworth, Cassells [class act], Chamberlain, Vinter, Trevor Christie, Brian Cox) - but they were all significantly superior to our current crop.

I think Fraser McLachlan, Maxime Chanot, Steve Slawson, Alex Jeannin and Blair "The Locksmith" Sturrock are all disqualified because they never "had it" in the first place whereas Joe Laidlaw had made around 500 football league appearances. Unfortunately his final four were for the Stags.

Maxime Chanot was also 18 when he made his few appearances here so definitely not ‘washed up’. He’s gone on to do OK to be fair making 70 odd appearances for New York City, playing in the same team as David Villa, Lampard and Pirlo in spells under Patrick Vieira

1976-1977 Division 3 Champions (League 1)
Johnny Miller - 40 league appearances and 5 goals
Peter Morris - 32 league appearances and 3 goals

1985-1986 Division 4 Promotion Team (3rd) (League 2)
Mick Vinter - 21 league appearances and 4 goals
Neil Whatmore - 30 league appearances and 9 goals
Neville Chamberlain - 39 league appearances and 16 goals
Keith Cassells - 40 league appearances and 12 goals

Trevor Christie also scored 24 league goals for the Stags in 92 appearances in Division 3 (League 1).

Can remember Steve Cherry surprisingly coming out of retirement from whatever he was doing to play one game in goal for us in the first game of the season away at Brentford. He was massive, looked like he'd been out of the game for years, and nobody even knew he was signed on a contract let alone starting until we got to Griffin Park.
I remember us getting a good battering and their striker scoring a hat-trick on the day (Kevin Rapley?) one of the goals he went round him like he wasn't even there.

Some bad shouts in here. Sellers and Pressman in particular were decent for us.

Sellars was class.
Pressman was a fat lazy slob with his feet nailed to the goal line. (Other posters opinions may vary)

No, he was just cack.. Not fitting with the title of the thread imo.

He was a young lad, not really a journey man

It's a disgrace that Johnny Miller has been described as washed up/past it/has been on this thread.

One of the finest footballers to ever turn out for the Stags with an absolute Exocet of a shot. He was far from past it when he came to this club and still a relatively young man. He was only 26 when he came here and made 113 appearances before going on to Port Vale and played for a further 2 seasons.

He was that well respected that he gained employment with the council in their leisure department before becoming the mayor's driver.

If that is how we are judging players then I'm very pleased that posters on here are not in our scouting network.
