They’ve actually spent 3 of the last 12 seasons in the Championship, a weird club, but far more successful than us

Scunthorpe United would like to announce that manager Paul Hurst and assistant manager Chris Doig have left their positions at the club with immediate effect.

We thank them for their efforts during their time at the club and wish them well for the future.

A bizarre way of announcing his departure :?

Peter Swann, the Scunthorpe Chairman, said on BBC Radio Humberside that Scunthorpe United have a playing budget in excess of £3 million and they are now trying to reduce the playing budget over the next few seasons to get it to a third of the current budget. They have around 35 players in their squad. Swann says that he had a real go at it trying to get Scunthorpe into The Championship but they just fell short and he is now trying to make the club sustainable.

He also stated that because they are unlikely to make the play offs they will probably not sign any more players in the transfer window unless they can get players out the door. He said they would probably not sign Junior Brown who is on loan from Coventry City. However they have now extended Junior's loan until the end of the season. They have also signed Jordan Gabriel on loan from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper, Ian Lawlor on loan from Donny.

Peter Swann used to own Gainsborough Trinity and is married to Karin Swann who is the neice of Tony Wilkinson who owns Wilkinsons (Wilkos). Karin Swann sold her 50% interest in the family business to Lisa Wilkinson, Tony Wilkinson's daughter, in 2014.

Peter Swann has said that the decision to dismiss Paul Hurst was not a footballing decision or about how Scunthorpe were playing or Paul Hurst's coaching. He said it was down to a breakdown in the relationship with Paul Hurst. They were clearly having difficulty communicating with each other so he decided to do something about it and dismiss Paul Hurst.

He said Scunthorpe's playing budget is over £3 million which is the second largest in League 2. He said the plan at the start of the season was to reduce the playing squad and reduce the playing budget but they ended up with more 5 players and a larger playing budget by Christmas.

The interview with him is around 25 minutes.

Fair play to Peter Swann. He always goes on the radio to explain his decisions to the fans. Interesting that he blamed appointing an inexperienced manager, Nick Daws, for their relegation to League 2 because he did not have the experience to get the players properly fit and ready for the season. That rings a few bells.
