Times move on though . When we only had the chad your comment made today would not be available for us to read until next Thursday. Used to hate Thursday when I was a paper lad .The chad used to be three times the size it is today and every house in Skegby had one delivered .

There were times that the Chad was a good read, now it’s extremely poor.

Mostly rehashed readily available information, poor grammar, advert riddled clickbait. (With the odd dig at the fans just to add that “shock jock” effect.

Using your example perhaps I should have stuck with my 1978 Hillman Imp

There were times when we could only rent videos from Blockbuster too.

Times change, we move on. It's down to businesses to keep up and remain relevant.

Wasn't "Chad Day" a Wednesday? Not lived in Mansfield for nearly 20 years so may have changed. I too was a paperboy around Forest Town and yes the bag swelled to double its size that day!

CHAD day was indeed Thursday and paper rounds had a 'drop' halfway round as a CHAD was so ft they wouldn't fit into a paper sack. You could barely lift a bag full of CHADs.

Yep. And we were always setting the chimney on fire when the blazing paper got sucked up.

That memory is right up there with waxing a slide with a landers bread paper or sitting in the bath with your new Levi’s on .

Another memory as a paperlad ws that the old broadsheet CHAD was so fat it couldn't be shove through them old brass letter boxes without shredding the first few pages. There was also the added risk that if you did get the paper through the recoil on the spring loaded letter box would have your fingers when it slammed shut.

It was a good early lesson in finding out I wsn't destinned for a career in customer service. Getting complaints from ancient 35 year old curmugeons that I hadn't managed to squeeze a 5 lb (2.5 kg kids) newspaper through a 2 x 3 inch (5 x 7.5 cm) spring loaded knuckle smashing device without ripping it, or keeping it bone dry on a November morning in driving rain, always ended in me being 'lippy or cheeky' to the customer.

Thr Chad of old was a good local newspaper, now it is far too widespread taking in Derbyshire etc.
Most of the local area correspondents threw in the towel years ago,.
The paper is dying on its feet, circulation is down, I am told by a media man, to less than 10000 in Mansfield.
I read the Chad every week for 60 years, now I don't buy it now, it serves no purpose.

That memory is right up there with waxing a slide with a landers bread paper or sitting in the bath with your new Levi’s on .

Catching a blue Midland General bus at the Quortex
Diving (forbidden) off the slab in the little pool at Mansfield Baths and needing stitches as a result
Buying my new Umbro football boots at Barrett’s Sports on Westgate
Getting my Claude Butler bike at A & C Sports on Stockwell Gate
Hot sausage rolls at Jacks Snax
Paddling in the huge paddling pools at Chesterfield Road Park and Titchfield Park
My first pint (Woodpecker Cider) at the Swan
Taking bottles back to the off-licence at The Ladybrook Hotel for the 3d deposits, having first nicked them from the Ladybrook’s back yard.
Buying loose fags at the same establishment
The water tower at the end of Berry Hill Road, and the Coop Dairy building on Southwell Road, that you could see from all over Mansfield.
Two mainline stations in Mansfield - The Midland and The Great Central
Saturday mornings at The Empire
Watching St Mary’s Church (Ladybrook) being built
Swimming at Moorhaigh Bridge
Swimming in the quarry at Vale Road, Woodhouse.
Running away from Bull Farm lads
Passing my 11 plus and choosing Sherwood Hall, over QEGS and Brunts
Riding Mansfield’s first escalator - at SuperSave on Church Street (now the site of NatWest bank)
Moving into mum and dads brand new council house on Ladybrook Estate
No shops on Ladybrook - so squadrons of mobile shops every day.
Tommy Rugg’s mobile shop who took coupons for anything in exchange for sweets (Tuffees)
Black Jacks and Fruit Salad chews (4 for an old penny)
Lucky Bags
Collecting Brook Bond Tea cards
Green Shield stamps
Brentford Nylons (sparking bedsheets!)
School milk
Plimsolls
Milk tokens
Home delivered Landers bread
R L Jones’ pop factory
Don Concannon
Scrumping
Building (shoddy) rafts on the Maun on Quarry Lane
Mansfield Cattle Market (every Monday)

Sorry everyone - Edders is suffering from nostalgia overload!

I had a house with a redifusion box. It had a few TV channels on it, very early SKY TV, which was mostly American programmes and Eurosport. I can't remember what the subcription was, but they would send a tv guide through the post each month.

For the day it was quite good, all ended when roadworks chopped the cable and the parent company decided it wasn't viable to reinstate.
