She wore a yellow ribbon

Postby ParisStag » Wed May 08, 2019 11:57 am

Not often we get to roll out this beauty so let's get it sung over these two play-off games. And all girls should go with a yellow ribbon on!

"She wore, she wore, she wore a yellow ribbon!
She wore a yellow ribbon in the merry month of May.
And when I asked her why she wore that ribbon,
She said it's for the Mansfield 'cause we're going to Wem-ber-lee!

Wem-ber-lee! Wem-ber-lee!
We're the famous Mansfield Town and we're going to Wem-ber-lee!
Wem-ber-lee! Wem-ber-lee!
We're the famous Mansfield Town and we're going to Wem-ber-lee!"

Classic MTFC song which I haven't heard since the late 60's/early 70's. And its that long ago that I can't even remember the last line........... other than it wasn't a reference to Wembley!

I seem to remember singing, shall we say, a slightly* less politically correct version...

Cough, splutter, cough, you'll not find me singing it.
Theirs not to reason why
Theirs but to do and die

Well traditionally, as far back at least as the famous amber kit of the 60s, our fans have sung songs about the colour 'yellow'. Yellow Submarine, She wore a yellow ribbon, yellows (amazing grace tune), yellows yellows yellows, etc.

I don't get why people moan about it being not yellow. Pretty much all our songs reference yellow and we've ALL sung those songs at one point or another. Over the years I bet more of our kits have been yellow than amber too. I'm not saying we should abandon amber, but to deny the yellow in us is to ignore our traditions.

Amber is essentially a orangey yellow or some may say a dark yellow. It's really not worth splitting hairs over.

Go and wash your mouth out gazza lad. Amber is amber and a proud and noble colour full of warmth with a hint of gold.
yellow is often associated with cowardice and resembles something the cat puked on the carpet last night.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines 'amber' thus...

'A honey-yellow colour typical of amber'

Pretty conclusive that, even if they are using American English.
