12/01/20: Scunthorpe United 0 Salford City 1
Possession: 46:54% xG: 0.6 v 1.4
This fairly even game was settled by a 89th minute mix up between Scunthorpe full back, Jordan Clarke and keeper, Mark Howard. Salford MOM, Oscar Threlkeld played a good ball behind Clarke on the edge of the area. Clarke eased off as Howard came charging out of his goal Stech style to collect the ball but Ian Henderson nipped in between them to knock the ball to the side and then tap it into the empty net.
Scunthorpe had George Taft making his debut in defence at left centre half playing next to another former Stags player, Junior Brown. Scunthorpe played well in the first half although both sides had chances to score. Hladky saved Eisa’s free kick early on and then Eisa shot wide from the edge of the area. Spence had a shot deflected wide and Loft headed wide at the far post. Salford’s best chance came when Threlkeld played a great ball to Henderson to put him clean through on goal but Henderson shot straight at Howard. Ashley Hunter also had a shot saved and Thomas Asante’s follow up shot was deflected wide. The Scunthorpe commentators were hopeful of Scunthorpe getting something out of the game at half time.
Salford were the better side in the 2nd half and Scunthorpe did not really threaten. Hunter beat Howard in goal with a shot but George Taft making his debut for Scunthorpe cleared off the line. Henderson and Burgess also had chances but it looked like the game was going to end up 0-0 until the late mix up. Salford go 5th in League 2.
Scunthorpe looked a stronger side with George Taft and Junior Brown in defence and Jem Karacan in midfield who was neat and tidy. Ashley Hunter is a quality player for Salford who played well but who has the ability to do a lot better.
Scunthorpe MOM: George Taft and Jem Karacan (1st Half)
Salford MOM: Oscar Threlkeld and Ian Henderson
