HT: Scunthorpe United 1 Leyton Orient 0
Orient dominated the first half with 58% possession but paid the price for not taking their chances. Danny Johnson missed a penalty and Cisse hit the post. Jobi McAnuff also shot wide when he should have scored. Scunthorpe had one decent move and Sam O'Malley crossed for Ryan Loft to head in at the near post.

FT: Scunthorpe United 2 Leyton Orient 0
Orient will be kicking themselves that they lost this game where they had 64% possession and 12 shots. They had four decent chances to score in the first half including Danny Johnson missing a penalty, Ousse Cisse hitting a post, Jobi McAnuff blasting wide and Conor Wilkinson having a good header saved. Mark Howard in goal for Scunthorpe was the hero. Scunthorpe went close from a corner when Lawrence Vigouroux had to tip a Alex Gilliead header over for a corner. Scunthorpe took the lead against the run of play in the 28th minute when Ryan Loft robbed Cisse on the halfway line on the right. Lewis Spence and Alfie Beestin moved the ball across the pitch to Sam O'Malley on the left who crossed for Ryan Loft to head in at the near post. HT: 1-0

The second half was more even and Orient got more and more frustrated as the game went on. Lee Angol came off the bench after a couple of months out injured. He had a good dribble into the area where he beat three or four players but then over ran it and lost possession just as he was about to shoot. Scunthorpe defended well and then scored a second goal when Alfie Beestin collected a ball on the right from Alex Gilliead after a throw in and then hit a shot into the far corner from the edge of the area. Orient then lost their discipline and were lucky not to have a man sent off.

A great win for Scunthorpe. Three wins on the trot after looking very poor early in the season.

Scunthorpe United MOM: Alex Gilliead and Manny Onariase who seemed to be moved over to right centre half to look after Danny Johnson.

Leyton Orient MOM: Conor Wilkinson and James Brophy

05/12/20: Colchester United 2 Grimsby Town 1 (HT: 1-1)
Possession: 51:49 xG: 1.1 v 2.1

I watched this game on Saturday after the Stags game. Colchester United started 16 year old Junior Tchamadeu at right back so they had a Junior to go with their Senior (Courtney). Matt Green was injured and missed the game. James Hanson was supposed to be returning from injury but felt his calf so did not travel.

Grimsby were unlucky not to get a draw from this game as shown by the xG. They conceded a soft goal on 9 minutes when a Courtney Senior corner went a long way across the area and seemed to hit Tommy Smith and bounce tamely into the corner of the Grimsby goal. If Grimsby had put a man on the post then he would have easily cleared it. Owura Edwards (on loan from Bristol City) was dangerous on the right for the Mariners and he pulled back a ball on the right into the area to Owen Windsor (on loan from West Brom) but his shot was saved by Dean Gerken. Grimsby did equalise a few minutes later when Luke Hendrie (nephew of Luke Hendrie) tucked a ball home at the near post from a Danny Rose corner. HT: 1-1

Col U took the lead again in the 56th minute from a great diagonal ball from Tommy Smith to Callum Harriott on the right who cut inside and dribbled past Kyle Bennett, Danny Rose and Danny Preston before slotting a shot past James McKeown. Grimsby pressed for an equaliser and George Williams had a free kick tipped over the bar, Owen Windsor went close with a bicycle kick, Danny Rose shot wide, Luke Waterfall had an effort go over the bar; and then Terry Taylor, Windsor and Hendrie all had shots blocked as Col U brought on defenders as subs to hang on for 3 points.

Col U MOM: Tommy Smith and Callum Harriott
Grimsby MOM: Owen Windsor and Luke Hendrie

Grimsby fans are being a bit negative about tonight's game against Newport.

HT: Grimsby Town 0 Newport County 2
The Mighty Mariners are all at sea (or all over the plaice). James McKeown has been dropped for Sam Russell in goal and James Hanson and Matt Green are still out injured. Joss Labadie hit the post for Newport in the 2nd minute from a Robbie Wilmott cross from the left. Grimsby then had their only few minutes of pressure and Montel Gibson shot wide at the far post. Josh Sheehan and Scott Twine are playing well in midfield for Newport along with wing backs, Liam Shephard and Ryan Haynes.

Newport took the lead in the 25th minute when Brandon Cooper collected the ball off Nick Townsend, brought the ball forward and played a great ball out to Ryan Haynes on the left. He cut inside and was brought down for a free kick. Scott Twine took the kick and it deflected off the wall into the far corner. Russell had no chance in goal. Scott Twine was then fouled by Danny Rose in the area for a silly penalty and Padraig Amond converted from the spot.

Danny Rose was subbed at half time by Ian Holloway.

FT Grimsby 0-2 Newport.

A very comfortable win for Newport.

Grimsby were hopeless in truth. Can they possibly be as bad on Saturday...

It's like a local derby with good history between us, so not sure.
Harrogate lost 3-0 the game before they beat us, it's a crazy league.

Ian Holloway, post match interview - thinks their performance was really good. Wow. Not how it looked to me, or indeed the BBC Radio Humberside commentators.

FT: Grimsby Town 0 Newport County 2
Owen Windsor came on as a sub for Grimsby at half time and he rocketed a free kick against the crossbar after Onura Edwards had been brought down on the edge of the area. Newport were soon back on top though and Scott Twine shot wide following a Matty Dolan free kick. Josh Sheehan also shot wide following a throw in; and Padraig Amond and Tristan Abrahams nearly got on the end of good crosses from Robbie Wilmott and Liam Shephard. Scott Twine, Josh Sheehan, Liam Shephard and Ryan Haynes all played well for Newport.

Grimsby are in deep water. They need to stem the tide with a good result against the Stags on Saturday. Mansfield need to try and rock the boat a bit more and give them a good broadside. The Mariners are down in the doldrums and ready to be sunk. Anchors aweigh, batten down the hatches and and set sail for Blundell Park.

Ian Holloway Post Match Interview: James Hanson has another calf tear. Matt Green is out for a month. Danny Preston and Sean Scannell are also injured.

they didn't. We really have to recall him at the start of January, and get him out somewhere else where he's going to get games.

Notts County are now 11 points behind top side Torquay.

just been chatting to a scunny fan this morning, he said their best 11 is quality however the strength in depth there is very poor, first few games a couple of their big players where out injured, said they are skint and won’t get anymore cash to strengthen in Jan, so if any pick up bookings or injury’s they will struggle again.

Kevin van Veen out for 10 weeks for Scunthorpe with a hamstring tear.
