There were plenty of current and ex- Stags’ players in action tonight with Jack Thomas and Zayn Hakeem (on loan for a month) playing for Basford and Adam Smith and Craig Westcarr playing for Matlock Town. Basford's Liam Hearn was still injured. Matlock had a reasonable first half and were unlucky to go into the break 1-0 down. Matlock enjoyed some success down the right and Craig Westcarr headed Daniel Vann’s cross narrowly wide and Jack Brownell shot wide when in a great position in front of goal. However, Jack Thomas then came to the party for Basford and curled in a great shot from the edge of the area into the corner of the net to give Basford the lead on 37 minutes. Zayn Hakeem was looking lively but Matlock centre half, Dwayne Wiley, was having a good game and keeping a tight rein on the Stags’ youngster.
Basford had much more success going forward in the 2nd half and Courey Grantham on the left made it 2-0 to Basford after 58 minutes. Zayn Hakeem squared the ball to Matt Thornhill at the back post to make it 3-0 on 72 minutes. 17 year old youngster, Kole Lambert, came on for Basford for the last 10 minutes and had a massive impact. He combined with Jack Thomas before Thomas was fouled in the area to win a penalty. Nathan Watson duly scored from the spot to make it four. Lambert then used his pace and sharpness to get in behind the Matlock defence twice to score two more goals for Basford. He looks a great prospect. I hope Basford have got him signed up on a contract but if not then the Stags ought to be giving him a trial at Field Mill.
Basford moved up to 2nd place in the Northern Premier League whereas Matlock Town are one off the bottom.
