FA YOUTH CUP MATCH REPORT: YOUNG BREWERS 3-2 MANSFIELD
Mon 21 Dec 2020, burtonalbionfc.co.uk, by Ian Hawkins

THE Young Brewers secured a place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mansfield Town.

Albion were twice in front through James Matthews' early strike and Luke Redfern's header just after time but were pegged back by goals from Jack Deakin and substitute Diego Edwards but once Matty Richardson finished a superb move by slotting hom on 72 minutes the Stags had no response and as the rain lashed down at the Pirelli Stadium the defence held firm to book a trip to Stoke City in the next round.

Sam Rose's set about their task with vigour showing a real desire to get forwards and put the Mansfield defence under pressure and it paid early dividends with the lead on nine minutes. MATTHEWS did well working his way into the penalty before smashing a near post shot into the net despite the best efforts of Stags keeper Owen Mason to keep it out.

Albion went in search of a quick second goal with Said Idouarab flashing a shot over the bar and Charlie Williams driving into the box before being thwarted at close range but as Mansfield began to press higher up on the Young Brewers back line they worked themselves an equaliser on 18 minutes. A flick header found DEAKIN and with his back to goal the striker turned sharply and fired low beyond Luke Bell in the Albion goal.

The Young Brewers were soon back on the front foot and Idouarab was unlucky to see a low drive spoon up off Frank Cooper and loop beyond the far post.

Mansfield went close to edgng in front on 38 minutes when a corner was headed back across the box and skipper Nathan Caine found room for a shot but could only fire wide.

The play quickly switched to the other end and Yewo Nyirenda saw a shot blocked with the rebound falling for Tommy Hill who dragged his effort across goal and beyond the far post.

Half time: Burton Albion 1-1 Mansfield Town

Williams was lively and alert in the opening moments of the second half weaving his way inside the area and seeing his effort blocked away by the leg of Mason. The reprieve for the Stags was only temporary though, Idouarab sending in a corner that was perfectly flighted for skipper REDFERN to bury a header at the near post.

The corner routine almost worked a treat from the opposite side on 53 minutes, Idouarab again with the teasing delivery and Callum Niven this time with the header straight at the keeper this time.

Mansfield levelled things for a second time midway through the second half. A speculative effort from Shamar Lawson looked to be heading wide but substitute EDWARDS gambled and got to the back post to slide the ball home.

But Albion were back in front five minutes later through a slick move. Nyirenda drove forwards before slipping an excellently timed pass for RICHARDSON to run on, cut inside his man and calmly slide the ball beyond the keeper.

Mansfield poured forward and Luke Bell was grateful to see Ethan Hill's rising drive go central allowing him to turn the ball over the crossbar with relative ease.

Nyirenda really should have put daylight between the two sides on 77 minutes, turning inside the box to leave the defender grounded he only had the keeper to beat but curled his shot wide of the goal.

The Stags went in search of a third equaliser and Caine had his head in his hands when Ben McLean threw himself in front of a goalbound effort to ensure it went wide.

Richardson was close to a second with a drive from the edge of the box but Taylor Anderson was well placed to help his keeper out by heading it over his own bar.

Stoppage time was played out in the Mansfield half as the Young Brewers ensured it would be they who progressed to the third round.

YOUNG BREWERS: Bell, McLean, Latty-Fairweather, Richardson, Redfern, Matthews, Idouarab, MAtthews, Nyirenda, Niven (Radcliffe, 63), Hill (Noon-Brandy, 90).
Substitutes: Moore, Power, Emery, Langfield, Maginniss.

Goals: BREWERS - Matthews (9), Redfern (48), Richardson (72); STAGS - Deakin (18), Edwards (67)
