Prolific marksman re-signs for Stags
mansfieldtown.net, Friday 28th August 2020

We are delighted to announce that prolific striker Nicky Maynard has re-signed with the Stags on a one-year-deal.

The forward spent last season in amber and blue, netting 15 goals in all competitions.

Maynard joined the Stags from Bury, following a campaign in which he scored 22 times as the Shakers were promoted to Sky Bet League One.

Starting his career at hometown Crewe Alexandra, he scored 35 goals in 67 matches before sealing a £2.25m move to Bristol City in 2008.

The 33-year-old found the net 46 times in 131 appearances for the Robins, before moving to West Ham in 2012.

Maynard scored six times in 17 outings for the Hammers before moving to Cardiff City, appearing in the Premier League for the Bluebirds.

Spells then followed at Wigan Athletic, MK Dons, Aberdeen and Bury, before joining the Stags last summer.

Manager Graham Coughlan told http://www.mansfieldtown.net: “It’s great to have Nicky back. He was our top goalscorer last season and is a natural finisher.

“He knows how we work and how we want to play.

“There’s now great competition up front and I’m excited to see how it pans out.

“Obviously Nicky is a few weeks short of match fitness, so fingers crossed we can get him up to speed and ready for the start of our league campaign.”

Nicky Maynard wants to be 'fighting at the top end of the table' following Mansfield Town return
chad.co.uk, By Duncan Browne

Nicky Maynard is back at Mansfield Town - and desperate to be ‘fighting at the top end of the table’.

The striker, who netted 15 goals for the Stags last season, looked set to move on after his contract expired on June 30.

But despite interest from League One clubs and League Two rivals, the former West Ham United and Bristol City forward has penned a one-year deal with the Stags.

"I enjoyed my time here. The manager knows me, I know the manager," the 33-year-old told http://www.mansfieldtown.net.

"He knows how to get the best out of me and hopefully I can get more than the 14 league goals I got last season, to help this club where it should be, and that's fighting at the top end of the table."

Last Thursday manager Graham Coughlan explained that the door remained open for Maynard, who had taken time to 're-evaluate' his future.

"I'm excited. I didn't think it was going to happen," Maynard continued.

"I had a few offers elsewhere, in League One. I felt like I'd done well to get a shot.

"The League One offers I had, location-wise, weren't very good for me. When I knew that there was still a chance to come back to Mansfield I took the chance. I'm glad I'm back.

He added: "I had offers, three or four other offers in League Two, but looking at it, for me personally, I feel like I've got unfinished business here."

Bantams called off Maynard chase because of travel distance
By Simon Parker, 31 Aug 2020

STUART McCall confirmed he did hold talks with Nicky Maynard before the striker re-signed for Mansfield.

The Bantams boss continues to target another frontman to fill the gap in his squad since James Vaughan returned to Tranmere.

Maynard was one of those he identified as a potential replacement after netting 15 goals for the Stags last season - but City’s distance from the 33-year-old’s home proved the stumbling block.

McCall said: “I had a good chat with Nicky and I think it would have been a good fit for both of us on the football side of things.

“But it soon became apparent talking geographically it didn’t suit either party. As I said before, I don’t want another James Vaughan situation.

“He wanted to stay where he’s based and I totally understand that.

“That’s the way football is at this moment in time.

“You don’t mind moving around if you’re a young lad.

“But when you get to a certain age, are settled in a place and want to go somewhere that’s a bit more local then that’s fine.

“You may not want the long travelling or staying over a couple of times a week and that’s fair enough.”

After missing out on Maynard, who was also wanted by Port Vale, McCall has been linked with fellow Mansfield forward Danny Rose.

He has also been chasing a couple of targets from teams in higher divisions.

McCall, who also remains in the market for a right back, added: “We will be looking to strengthen in the coming weeks.

“We’ve put calls into clubs but you can’t force them to release players when you want. They’ll have a look at them first and make their decision.

“Likewise, if it’s free agents they might have other options to think about as well. But there’s only so long you can wait and you move on.”

'You have to be interested' - John Askey on Port Vale talks with Nicky Maynard
By Michael Baggaley, 21 AUG 2020

"Port Vale boss John Askey has revealed he has spoken to Nicky Maynard but faces competition for the experienced goalscorer. Maynard is a free agent having spent last season at Mansfield Town. But the 33 year old scored 15 goals in 35 games for the Stags and is in demand. He began his career at Crewe, scoring 35 goals in 67 games before Bristol City paid £2.25m for him in 2008. He had more big money moves, to West Ham for £1.65m, and Cardiff, for £2.5m, and has also had spells at Wigan, MK Dons, Aberdeen and Bury.

Askey said he is still looking for a striker. He explained: “We have talked to one or two and it is just a waiting game. We haven’t got anything for definite but there are one or two players now who haven’t got fixed up so they become more available to our wage bracket. As for Maynard, he said: “We have had a chat to Nicky. He is still available. He has other clubs after him. I think ideally he wants to stay local but his record, especially in the last few years, has been very good, at Bury and Mansfield. “When someone is available like that, you have to be interested.”

Graham Coughlan told iFollow Stags on the first day back of pre-season:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEbWoGBjS-A&feature=youtu.be

"I'm a big admirer of Nicky Maynard. Nicky always indicated he wanted to play at the next level.
We're here, I've spoken to him. David Sharpe has spoken to his agent.
What Nicky's looking for may not be within our remit. There is a certain price that I will put on people's heads, and Nicky is more than welcome to come back and join us but it will be under my terms, it will be under the finances that we have in place for that particular position."
