PFA strike a deal with Mansfield Town to guarantee player wages amid coronavirus crisis with the club able to class them as 'furloughed workers' to claim compensation
By SIMON JONES FOR THE DAILY MAIL, 26 March 2020 - Mansfield players had been asked to take a wage cut to help the club survive - The coronavirus outbreak has hit EFL clubs hard during the football suspension - The PFA initially urged the League Two players to hold off taking the deduction - There were doubts over their eligibility for the government's furlough scheme - But now players will be paid as normal and termed as 'furloughed workers' Mansfield players will be paid as normal after the PFA struck a deal with the club's hierarchy The PFA has struck a compromise with Mansfield Town after their players were asked to agree a wage reduction by club chairman John Radford. Staff received a letter on Wednesday asking them to sign an agreement allowing the club to ask the government to pay 80 per cent of their wages up to a maximum of £2,500. However, the PFA had initially warned players on Thursday to hold off signing any agreements as they were unsure whether footballers on fixed contracts are deemed eligible under the government guidelines. After further talks though, the PFA agreed with Mansfield that players would be paid as normal but could be termed as 'furloughed workers' while away from training, to allow the club to seek reimbursement for the outlay under the government scheme. Mansfield are among the better payers in League Two with some of their players on salaries of around £2,100 a week.
