Boss: We displayed ‘different qualities’ to earn win
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 8th October 2022

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough says his side had to show a ‘different set of qualities’ to grind out a 1-0 win at Barrow.

Jordan Bowery scored a decisive second-half header which saw the Stags make it four away wins in a row in Sky Bet League Two to beat the Bluebirds at Holker Street this afternoon.

After a 2-2 draw at home to Hartlepool eight days ago, Stags returned to winning ways against play-off rivals Barrow, and the manager was pleased with his side’s versatility to earn the victory.

“The last two performances we’ve had at home against Hartlepool and Derby [County] we’ve played some absolutely brilliant football,” said the boss.

“[There was a] Different set of qualities required today and when we got ahead I thought we defended brilliantly.

“[There wasn’t] Much in the game at all. I don’t think we were brilliant for most of the game, certainly in our sort of play.

“It was important to get something from the game today on the back of the disappointment of not beating Hartlepool, so we’re back on track.

“First-half, I don't think they created much and we certainly didn't away from home. You’re never too disappointed to get in at 0-0 at half-time

“We said to the players, it might be one of those sort of days where we don’t play very well. We [managed to] get a goal from a set play and [we] look after it.

“These 1-0 away victories are vital over the course of the season.”

The Stags were once again without several players due to injury and showed great character to earn another good win on the road.

“Let’s face it, we’re not at our best, we’re a little bit down physically [as] we’ve got a few players missing,” said the manager.

“It’s one of those days as a team, you get together and you make sure that you come off the pitch with a result.”

Nigel was asked if the Stags should’ve found the back of the net on more than one occasion today: “Yeah, we should [have added to the tally],” he said.

“Galey [James Gale] went half clear and Quinny [Stephen Quinn] had a couple; he had one at the edge of the box and one at the far post as well.

“[A] Little bit more composure in those areas and we might have got a second [goal].

“No matter what happens, when seven [added] minutes goes up, they’re going to throw the kitchen sink at you.

“You hope [that you can] nick one on the break, but apart from a couple of scares [we were okay].

“Christy [Pym] made one great save, down to the right-hand side with a bobbling shot from the edge of the box. He got a good hand on it and I think it actually went over the bar rather than wide.

"But apart from that I thought we saw it out pretty well.”

We deserved that win says Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough after scrappy away clash at Barrow
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Saturday 8th October 2022

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough believed his side deserved their hard-earned three points in today's scrappy 1-0 away win which saw them leapfrog Barrow into fifth place in League Two.

Jordan Bowery's header just after half-time sealed the win and Clough said: “I thought we just about deserved it for our endeavour and determination.

“I don't think we were very good today in large parts of the game apart from our determination and resolution not to concede a goal. Today was about the result, not the performance.

“We showed character and I think over the course of however many games this season we are going to need those sort of qualities when you do come away to places like this.

“It wasn't a brilliant game - a bit scrappy. So you just need to make sure you get on the bus with that clean sheet intact.

“It was also our reward for Friday night as deserved to win on Friday night.

“If you'd offered us four points from the two games we'd have taken it. They have just come about in a slightly different way.”

He added: “I am told that after today, over the last 46 league games - a full season - we have got 92 points.

“That is the sort of tally you are going to need to get out of this league. We just need to do that over a proper season, not across two seasons.

“When you think back to this time last year I think we were in the midst of our run of 14 games without a win. So we're in better shape than this time last year.”

Stags still needed another fine late Christy Pym save to preserve their slender advantage and Clough said: “He has had one major save, his only real save in the game, and he's come up trumps again for us. But I think we protected him well today and deserved the clean sheet.”

Stags were missing Kellan Gordon (sore groin) and Will Swan (illness) and also saw Stephen McLaughlin (knee) and Riley Harbottle (ankle) limp off today.

“They are both doubtful for next week,” said Clough.

“We will have to see how they respond this week but they have played a lot of football in a short space of time. That's why we need a squad.”

Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"We were very close to getting a second one from a set play, it hit the underside of the bar and nearly an own goal."
"Galey and Lawsey have gone on and done well. It was a day when everyone needed to contribute.
"I thought Perchy just slotted in straight away. Elliott Hewitt played 2 or 3 different positions, right centre half to left back to wing back and he was very steady today.
"Kellan Gordon felt his groin in the Hartlepool game. He didn't make the Derby game. And it was too sore for him to travel. He should be in contention for next week.
"Will Swan was ill on Wednesday night, he went to the doctor's who said he's got a virus, so we'll see how he is in the next week or so.
"Kieran Wallace, the head injury, the protocols that he came off with the other night.
"Stephen McLaughlin felt his knee a bit after the Derby game, and then he got a whack on the far side (today).
"Riley Harbottle went down towards the end of the first half with an ankle injury.
"Both (McLaughlin and Harbottle) will be doubtful for next week."
"George Maris also went off with an ankle injury."
"Ollie Clarke had been booked, rather daftly for dissent which will result in a fine. Then he made a robust, a typical Ollie Clarke challenge, which they were reacting to, so we didn't take any chances."

‘My performance was shocking’ admits Mansfield Town goal hero Jordan Bowery after win at Barrow
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Saturday 8th October 2022

Mansfield Town goal hero Jordan Bowery described his own performance as 'shocking' as the Stags edged a scrappy 1-0 win away at rivals Barrow this afternoon.

Bowery felt he had a poor game overall at right wing back but was delighted to pop up with his first goal of the season to make it four away wins in a row.

“The performance was shocking but the result was excellent. My performance was certainly shocking,” he said.

“The gaffer said afterwards 'you were rubbish but good goal!' I don't know what happened but, hopefully, if I play the next game I can put on a better performance. Everyone has those games - it happens. So I was happy to get the goal.

“We were not at our best, but all that matters is going back home on the bus with the three points.

“It wasn't great to watch, but we did the job.

“We couldn't string passes together in the first half uphill against the wind, though they didn't really cause us any problems to be honest.

“We came out a bit better second half, nicked that goal, and I feel it was quite comfortable until near the end. They had a good chance and Christy Pym made a great save.

“He got down and made an unbelievable save.”

Stags were certainly improved offensively after the break and Bowery said: “We needed to take it to them as if we sat back and let them put balls into our box we could have come back with zero points.

“It's been a while since I scored, so I am happy to finally get one.”

That is now four away wins in a row after losing the first three on the bounce.

“That first away win gave us that belief and we know we can go to places and get a win or a point on the road,” he said.

“We look hard to beat. Defensively we look strong, so if we can nick a goal I feel we can just see games out.”

Bowery offers frank assessment of Barrow win
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 8th October 2022

Jordan Bowery lambasted his own performance as 'shocking' but admitted delight at bagging the winning goal as Stags beat Barrow 1-0 in Cumbria.

The forward-cum-wing-back nodded home five minutes into the second half to secure maximum points for Nigel Clough's men.

The win becomes Mansfield's fourth successive league victory on the road in a remarkable transformation of results away from home.

And speaking after the match, a brutally honest Bowery said: "The performance [was] shocking, the result excellent.

"We weren't at our best but all that matters is that we're going back home on the bus with the three points. It wasn't great to watch but we did the job.

"I was shocking. I wasn't very good. The gaffer came up to me after the games and goes 'you were rubbish, but good goal'. Hopefully in the next game if I'm playing I can put on a better performance. But I got the goal so I'm happy with that."

A dour first half saw chances at a premium for both sides before Stags turned on the jets in the second period, and Bowery said: "We couldn't string many passes together in the first half.

"It was uphill and against the wind and we couldn't really create a goal threat.

"They didn't cause us many problems but in the second half we came out a bit better and nicked that goal.

"Pymmy [Christy Pym] made a great save. Other than that I feel like it was a well-deserved three points.

"If we sat back and let them pump balls into our box like they can do then we could have come back on the bus with zero points. We had to take it to them."

Reflecting on his first goal of the season, Bowery said: "It was a good ball in. Hawks [Oli Hawkins] has leapt up and does what he does best. Their 'keeper has made a great save and it fell to me. I thought it was going to hit the post but luckily it hit the back of the net."

-------------------

On the 7 minutes of time added on, Bowery told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"That's our own fault, we time-wasted quite a lot. But you've got to do those things to try to slow the game down."

-------------------

Pete Wild told the Barrow website:
"Between both boxes there was nothing in the game.
"We're disappointed to give a set-piece goal away, because we know they're strong on that and we've been working on trying to stop that.
"We've shown loads of endeavour to try and get a goal. And we have a blatant penalty shout in the 95th minute and for whatever reason the officials can't see it.
"The way the officials have managed the second half, well to say it's unacceptable is an understatement.
"Mansfield are a top side at this level and the game was nip and tuck."
