STAGS THROUGH TO FA TROPHY SEMI-FINAL

Martin Shaw at Field Mill

The Stags beat Chasetown 3-1 on Tuesday in the FA Trophy quarter-final replay. The first leg of the semi-final is against Luton at Field Mill on SUNDAY 13 March midday kick-off. The Stags started very poorly and were outplayed by Chasetown for 30 minutes, but took the lead against the run of play with a great goal from Adam Murray on 35 minutes after a good cross from Ashley Cain. Chasetown equalised after a poor punch by Grof and a scramble in the box, but a controversial goal from Louis Briscoe restored the lead within just 4 minutes and a fine goal by Danny Mitchley on 77 minutes sealed the victory.

The first chance came on 9 minutes with great play down the right by Ramone Stevens, the Chasetown right winger, who put in a good cross and Jevons headed wide of the left post with a diving header. A minute later, Jevons chipped wide from another good finish as the Stags were rocking early on.

The first good move for the Stags came on 13 minutes as Murray found Spence on the left wing and Spence put in a wonderful cross which Connor headed a foot over the bar. Parsons tried an audacious chip for the Scholars on 16 minutes lobbing Grof from 40 yards but putting it wide. The Scholars were completely on top. Murray was booked for the Stags and within 5 minutes was given a final warning by referee Mohareb who told the Stags captain to calm down. On 27 minutes more good play by Ramone Stevens and from his cross Birch shot well wide. Then on 31 minutes a ball was crossed in from the left and Spence had to be alert to clear just before Stevens got there. Another good Chasetown move on 32 minutes as the ball was swept from right to left and Jevons’ shot was blocked by Silk. Mansfield were quite simply being played off the park by the team from two divisions down.

But the game changed on 35 minutes as the Stags took the lead against the run of play. Ashley Cain’s run and cross was swept into the net by Adam Murray for a superb goal.

On 37 minutes another cross from Cain but this time it was wasted. Moments later a great turn by Mitchley who received the ball from a throw in on the right nipped between 2 defenders and fired wide of the left post from an angle. On 40 minutes, Chasetown were on the attack again as the Stags blocked two shots in quick succession.

On 42 minutes, Naylor played a good ball down the left to Mitchley who cut in and his shot was saved. A minute later, a similar move as Connor broke down the left, cut inside and shot wide from a tight angle with Mitchley shouting at his fellow striker afterwards saying he should have passed it.

Half time 1-0

A flying start for the Stags in the second half with 3 chances in the first 3 minutes. Firstly a poor free kick from Cain hit the first man but was headed back in by Thompson and fell to Mitchley whose shot was blocked. Then Murray found Mitchley a minute later and his shot was blocked again. Finally on 48 minutes, Silk flicked a shot wide from 6 yards, probably the first time he’s been in the six yard box all season.

But the Scholars were level on 52 minutes. A free kick from the right was punched up in the air by Grof and after a real scramble Teesdale fired into the roof of the net from close range. Dreadful defending from the Stags.

But Mansfield were back in front within four minutes. Connor headed a cross against the bar, Briscoe headed the rebound against the post, Mitchley’s shot was blocked on the line and finally Briscoe put the ball into the net. The linesman had raised his flag for offside but after the referee and linesman collaborated, the referee awarded the goal.

On 58 minutes, a flying header from Connor was just wide from Silk’s cross. At the other end a minute later, Birch cut inside from the left and Grof had to save low down. Nice play from the Stags on 64 minutes as Briscoe played a ball forward and Spence made a great run but was just beaten to it by the keeper. On 69 minutes, Cain’s corner from the left was missed by the keeper and Connor had a chance from 6 yards out but swung and missed.

The crucial third goal for the Stags arrived on 77 minutes. A great run from Connor down the left and he squared the ball for Mitchley who fired into the net with a first time shot. Connor was through down the left on 79 minutes but a brilliant tackle from Slater denied him just as he was about to pull the trigger. On 80 minutes, great play from Briscoe reminiscent of his goal against Newport earlier in this competition when he received the ball from a throw-in on the left, cut inside and fired a thunderbolt which hit the top of the bar. Another chance went begging for the Stags on 81 minutes with a poor shot from Murray. Then on 84 minutes, Naylor headed wide off a defender from Cain’s corner. With the chances coming thick and fast for the Stags, Briscoe’s left footed shot was deflected just wide on 86 minutes, and on 88 minutes, Mitchley chested a ball down and fired just over. On 89 minutes Sandwith achieved a hole in one as his boot into touch went straight down the hole in the roof of the Bishop Street stand without touching the sides, to a great roar from the fans. Chasetown missed the chance for consolation a minute into stoppage time when Jevons sent a free-kick a foot over the bar.
