The Stags made one change from the side narrowly beaten by Wigan on Tuesday night with new signing Junior Mendes coming in to replace the injured Iyseden Christie and partner Andy White upfront as the Stags went looking for only their second ever victory at Plymouth.
The stags got off to the worst possible start though when after a cross from Argyle full-back David Worrell with less than two minutes gone on the clock Liam Lawrence powered a header past Kevin Pilkington into his own net,the Argyle PA system gave the goal to David Beresford but it was obviously an own goal.Mansfield came roaring back though and with only 11 minutes gone Wayne Corden put in a fantastic cross which Andy White just failed to connect with but Lawrence was at the far-post to force the ball home and make up for his earlier unfortunate own goal. The rest of the first half was end-to-end stuff with both sides having plenty of chances.Pilkington had to be alert to thwart David Friio whilst Craig Disley sent an overhead effort just wide for the Stags and Lawrence brought the best out of Pilgrims keeper Roman Larrieu who had to be at full-stretch to deny him his third goal of the game!Just before half-time Aljofree was booked for Plymouth for a tackle from behind on Lawrence and Andy White was booked for the Stags for a similar offence on Coughlan.
Half-time:1-1
The second half saw Plymouth come flying out of the blocks with Ian Stonebridge's looping shot hitting the corner of post and crossbar with Pilkington beaten.Corden was then booked on 49 minutes for the Stags for time-wasting when taking a free-kick.Stonebridge again then came close for Argyle, when after dancing his way through the Stags defence his shot went inches wide of Pilkington's right-hand post.It was Mansfield's turn to attack now and from Corden's cross White's overhead kick effort clipped the top of the crossbar.Keith Curle made his first substition of the day on 57 minutes when he brought on Lee Williamson to replace Disley.New signing Mendes then had the chance to become an instant hero when from White's cross he dribbled round a defender and goalkeeper but agonisingly his shot was deflected wide for a corner off of Argyle's Coughlan's heel.Stonebridge then had another chance for Argyle but after rounding Pilkington sent his shot wide of the post.Just a moment later that miss was forgotten though when after Rhys Day's underhit backpass Pilkington's attempted clearance hit Argyle striker Micky Evans and rebounded perfectly off him to substitute Martin Phillips who had the easy task of slotting the ball into the empty net.A real sickener for the battling Stags.Tom Curtis was next into the referee's notebook after a collision with Jason Bent on 71 minutes. The match was all over on 84 minutes when striker Evans turned to smash a half volley past Pilkington to give the scoreline a rather flattering look.Curle then brought on Mitchell and Beardsley to replace the hard-working Mendes and White.Pilkington had to save late on from Evans and Friio also volleyed wide. There was still time for McGlinchey to be booked for hauling down Lawrence who himself then got booked for slamming the ball down in a show of frustration.Overall the Stags put in a good performance for Curle,Gannon and Holland and were very unlucky not to have taken at least a point back home.Argyle manager Paul Sturrock also praised the battling Stags. We must now set our sights on all three points at home to Brentford on Tuesday night.Man of the match is a tricky one but for me it just goes to Lawrence.
