A spirited second half fight back by the Stags was not enough to stop them crashing out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle.

The caretaker managers made 3 changes with O’Connor coming in for Jason Lee. Kay came in at left back with Jeannin pushing up into the midfield at the expense of Ahmed who was surprisingly dropped to the bench. Somner slotted in to the centre midfield as Hurren continued to play centre back in the place of the injured Adie Moses as Gary Silk took the captain’s armband.

The Stags made a terrible start as Wrexham took the lead in the 3rd minute. Good play by Mark Williams on the left hand side skipping past Silk and Hurren to give Jon Brown a simple tap in.

Things went from bad then to worse for the Stags, a Fleming header was turned away smartly by Annerson but from the resulting corner Ashley Westwood converted past the helpless Annerson.

Stags first glimpse of attacking play came when a Jeannin throw came back to Kay who whipped a teasing ball across the 6 yard box which was narrowly missed by the diving O’Connor.

Wrexham nearly extended their lead in the 41st minute when the impressive Jon Brown struck a 35 yard shot narrowly wide. The lively Brown continued to terrorise the Stags defence as a dangerous looking cross from the left hand side was blocked by a sliding O’Hare.

An impressive passage of play by the Stags set up by Matt Somner with a lovely pass to the right hand side to Silk who whipped a great ball on to Sinclair who could only head straight at the keeper.

The half ended just as Stags started to get momentum. An O’Hare free kick came out to O’Connor who shot on the turn which just went past the post.

Half time 2-0

Wrexham again started brighter as Mike Williams forced a good save from Annerson.

The introduction of the returning Michael Blackwood (first appearance since away at York in the FA Cup) and the impressive loanee Ahmed saw the Stags take control of the midfield and the game.

The Stags deservedly got back into the game in the 69th minute when Kay delivered a brilliant cross which was neatly controlled by Sinclair who played a ball back for O’Connor to tap in.

The Stags began to play more freely as Blackwood burst through the midfield but delayed a shot after a neat one two with O’Connor.

The lively O’Connor then forced an excellent low save from Ward.

Wrexham continued to play their part as Mark Williams struck the post from the right hand side.

Ahmed then played another through ball to Sinclair but an abysmal first touch which Ward collected and the chance had gone.

Time was now running out for the Stags and in the 85th minute Kay burst through the midfield but his 25 yard shot was dragged wide.

Wrexham yet again hit the woodwork as the now quieter Mark Williams struck a post.

The caretakers managers made their last throw of the dice when they threw youngster Lewis Trimmer into the fray. It turned out to be far to late as Wrexham ran down the clock.

Mansfield Town’s first game in the FA Trophy ended in defeat but a much improved second half performance left the Stags fans feeling positive.

Man of the match: James Kay

Report by: stagsmad11 and Neil Matthews at the Racecourse Ground

Line Up:
Annerson 6 Not bad, made a few good saves.
Silk 7 Good game as usual, at fault for first goal though.
Hurren 7 Good game, swept up in the defence.
O'Hare 7 Won a lot of headers, good game.
Kay 8 Made his debut and was really impressive especially when Jeannin went off; what a cross this lad has got.
Arnold 6 Quiet, failed to make a massive impact.
D'Laryea 6 Good game, passing wasn't bad; good second half, not the best first half though.
Somner 5 Not the best at all running all over the place, but didn't show any creation at all.
Jeannin 4 Thought he would do a lot better at left midfield, but didn't do anything really; lost the ball evetytime basicly and arguing with the youngster Kay.
Sinclair 7 Not a bad game; took him time to get into though, but looked a threat; did quite well in the first half.
O'Connor 8 Came alive in the second half; did well, should have scored more though, but all in all good game.
Sub Line Up:
Ahmed (for Somner, 58mins) 7 Did well, don't know why he didn't start, I have a sneaking feeling it will be his last game next week.
Blackwood (for Jeannin, 66mins) 7 Did really well, got involved and looks positive.
Trimmer (for D'Laryea, 88mins) Not enough time to comment or judge.
Subs not used: Gamble, Kitchen.
