Kilgour has to be mentioned, as does DKD. Bowery next, with Pym. Plenty of other contenders for the short list, but there can only be one winner. Flint. I thought that the season was over when Kilgour had to drop out, but Flint slotted in immediately and is just the experienced and dominant presence we needed to get our defence into shape. The whole season has been built on that.

During 2023, we have played 54 games, only seven players have started at least half of these games (27).

Using Martin's ratings for players who start games (numbers in brackets), the averages are as follows

7.59 Flint (27)
7.49 Akins (43)
7.44 Quinn (31)
7.38 Keillor-Dunn (45)
7.20 Bowery (38)
7.19 Pym (47)
7.07 Reed (30)

So it looks like Flint or Akins as the player of the year.

Interesting how all of the Top 3 are at least 34, shows how important experienced old heads are to us.

I think that for me, it is not just about having the highest rating, but what you have done for the team.

We have people like Quinn and Flint who are excellent at what they do. They have been doing it for years, and have a vast amount of experience in those positions... it is expected (IMO)

Then you have Akins, who has adapted from realistically being a winger, to leading the line and playing occasional wing-back.

You have DKD who has slotted into to an attacking midfield role, and is scoring goals.

Christy Pym has been undoubtably a brilliant addition to the team and he is a key reason why we are conceding so few goals

But then you have Jordan Bowery. A player who 12 months ago seemed surplus to requirements, and many people expected him to be offloaded, or were even questioning why he was even here...

Well, I think we're all singing off a different hymn sheet now. He may not be the greatest left-back, right-back, centre-half or centre forward we have ever had, or even the best we have currently got, but he has filled-in in all those positions. As critical of him as we may be, at times, he is one of the main reasons we are riding high in the league and not having to spend stupid money buying replacement players to cover injuries.

He goes out on the pitch and absolutely tries to do his best in every single role he is asked to fulfil, and that can change 2 or 3 times in a game.

I have nothing but respect for what he has done over the past 12 months and consider him one of our most valuable players at the moment.

I’m thinking DKD based on some of his goal involvements which have won us games. I could easily argue Pym or Flint have saved us in games too. What a player Bowery has been too. DKD just shades it for me.

Problem with using ratings is its just one persons opinion. For every Man Of The Match Martin picks somebody else will think it was a different player.

Also, individual match ratings dont take into account a players stature or influence. For example, Akins not playing affects the whole structure of how we play. Yet he might not be the best player every week. Hope I'm making sense.

You are, Martin also has his own way of scoring, which others won't use. I'm generally not far away from Martin's scores but regularly disagree with his MOM, Stockport being the latest.

There are similar issues with Eggy's ratings. A classic example is the rating of JB, we know there are some on here who for whatever peculiar reason don't like him and this is often reflected in his score. In fact, I think Eggy can extrapolate data to show how many 4's and 5's JB has been awarded this season, it would be interesting to know - of course if there are any 4's it would also illustrate how sad some people truly are

I don't think that stats work at all for this award.

For that reason, Bowery has a good claim despite not being near the top of the stats. He symbolises all that is successful about this squad. A great team player, with skill and quality of a higher level. Modest and humble to boot.

I'd still back Flint, though. Our Achilles heel has been a leaky and inconsistent defence, vastly improved by the addition of Kilgour. With him out of the equation it looked like we'd be back to square one. Then in strode Flint.

"Davis Keillor-Dunn has won Stags' award for Player of 2023.

The attacker, who joined from Burton Albion in January, scored 19 goals and provided nine assists in 47 appearances during the calendar year. Stags' number 40 has since netted his 20th goal for the club in Mansfield's New Year's Day win over Stockport County. Vesatile performer Jordan Bowery finished second in the poll. Summer signing, and defender, Aden Flint came third."

I didn't even know this was an actual vote, doh! Sorry JB, you'd have received my vote if I'd been more switched on but DKD is also a worth winner - Flint has been great so far in season 23/24 and will probably rightly win that award.

To me, the one player that has totally changed the whole ethos and atmosphere around the club and it’s fans since he came is :
Aden Flint. This signing has put a signal out to all others in this league that MTFC are serious contenders and not just a selling club but have serious intentions of moving up the football pyramid.
This doesn’t mean he is the only player that has been impressive this year, there are many others, but as a statement of intent, this proves we are not here only to make the numbers up.
Thanks must go out to the owners and management team on getting us where we are thus far
