The best player to ever play at Field Mill?

Postby Marky Mark » Sat Dec 23, 2023 11:02 am

Just saw that Luis Suarez has joined Inter Miami and got me thinking about whether he'd be one of the best players (regardless of him being of dodgy character) that has ever played at Field Mill in a competitive match. Played for Barcelona, Ajax, etc - won La Liga 5 times, Champions League, played at World Cups, won World Club, European Golden Boot, Premier League Golden Boot, etc. Can anyone think of any others? Competitive match, i.e, non friendlies, testimonials, etc

Suarez was successful, but when you say the "best" player, then the likes of Moore & Hoddle walk all over him.
One of the best players I saw at Field Mill was Stan Bowles.. But that just makes me old.

You could maybe list all of the West Ham World Cup Winners ahead of Suarez and I’m sure there must have been plenty of internationals in the various cup games. There’s also a fair few who have played in friendlies as youths before going on to fame and fortune. I remember seeing Kyle Walker in a friendly against Sheffield United together with someone else who went on to represent England but I can’t recall exactly who that was, a centre half I think but not sure.

Bobby Moore was the best player to visit but that night in February 69 wasn't what you'd rate him on.

The player who took my breath away was Duncan McKenzie when he was on loan to us. OK maybe I was only 13 or so at the time but I'd never seen a player with such skill and who's every touch seemed to affect the game in his short two spells with us.

Le Tiss or Hoddle for me.
Both extraordinarily skillful, insightful players.
Also much better sportsmen than Suarez.

Remember seeing Peter Beardsley play for Hartlepool (I think) when he was at the end of his career but he was still way too good for anyone else on the pitch.

I can remember Bruce Rioch with Torquay.
They got a free kick on edge of our area, think it was Brian Cox at the time lined our wall up but Rioch took one step and rocketed it straight by Cox's tabs, he never moved, what a hit!

of course its all opinions. I remember being in awe of the Bristol City and England centre forward Johnny Atyeo when he came to town. More like a film star with black brylcreamed hair. I think Bristol named a stand after him.

Le tissier for me also.

Had pleasure of watching him a lot back when I watched saints frequently. Such a talent and such a shame because he never moved clubs he wasn't trusted enough in an England shirt.

I remember the day well. Some guy decided to streak while holding all his clothes, ended up dropping his phone without realizing

Was David Seaman in goal when we played Man City in pre-season? Someone scored an absolutely worldie but I can’t remember who.

Le Tissier was unbelievable for Southampton. Not the same quality but did Stuart Pearce ever play at the Mill in the County Cup?

Edgar Davids when player manager of Barnet?

Le Tiss was an unbelievable talent who could smash or bend the ball with either foot. Only missed one penalty out of 40 odd, I was there when he missed it against Forest, Mark Crossley fell over and the ball hit his legs

Has to be Bobby Moore.

Best in a home shirt, Ken Wagstaff by a county mile.

Watched a Mickey Mouse cup game game against Southampton. They had a 16 or 17 year old kid called Theo Walcott. Not the best to play at the mill but I can remember everyone asking who he was.

Same with Chris Waddle when he came with Torquay. Played in centre mid and hardly left the centre circle the whole game, but his skill level was so evident. Some of his passes were sublime, and the vision he had for picking the pass was unbelievable. Sadly for them, his team mates were not of the same calibre and what would have been a superb pass often came to nothing as they weren't reading the game in the same way !!

He could also kick balls out for throw ins and get paid for it, spot fixing at it’s finest.

Halo should b taken from him, disgraceful.

Was Kenwynne Jones up front for them that night too?
