The 20-year-old is a product from the Magpies youth production line and has also gained loan experience at Tamworth and Lewes.

After putting pen to paper this afternoon, Mitchell told http://www.mansfieldtown.net: “I want to try and get some vital experience and help the Stags move up the table.”

Meanwhile manager Paul Cox has stated in his matchday programme notes that goalkeeper Alan Marriott, who suffered a shoulder injury in training this week, will undergo surgery and will be out for 'a number of months'.

Manager Paul Cox was quick to swoop to sign the 20-year-old after number one goalkeeper Alan Marriott suffered a shoulder injury in training.

He will be ruled out for several months as he requires surgery and Stags' other goalkeeper, Shane Redmond, also has a bruised arm.

Mitchell trained with Mansfield over the last two days and is set to be between the sticks for today's visit of Hereford, as Cox's side look to record a fifth consecutive home victory.

Mitchell said: "I want to try and get some vital experience and help the Stags move up the table."

And his goalkeeping coach with the Magpies, former Stag Kevin Pilkington, backed the youngster to handle the pressure.

Pilkington said: "He is only 20, a big unit and obviously he has still got a lot to learn.

"But he has played at this level before, with Tamworth last season, so he knows how to handle it and he is relishing the opportunity.

"Hopefully he will go in there, do well and enjoy it."

The goalkeeper has also gained loan experience at Lewes

Promising young goalkeeper joins Stags on loan...

Notts County can confirm that promising young goalkeeper Liam Mitchell has joined Mansfield Town on a one-month loan deal.

Mitchell, who came through the youth ranks at Meadow Lane, before winning a professional contract ahead of the 2011.12 season, has previously spent time on loan at Tamworth and will look to benefit from further first team action at Field Mill over the coming weeks.

Mansfield boss Paul Cox has been in the market for a new custodian since both his first choice goalkeeper, Alan Marriott, and understudy Shane Redmond suffered training ground injuries this week.

And 20-year-old Mitchell fits the bill for the Blue Square Premier outfit, going straight into the squad for the visit of Hereford United on Saturday.

The loan deal, which was finalised on Friday, runs until Saturday 27 October, the day after Mansfield's trip to Dartford, and we will bring you updates of his progress here on the club's official website
