The Stags have been linked with Keith Curle on a short term deal, though it is now looking less likely that the veteran ex-England player will be joining Mansfield.
Curle is having talks with another Division 2 side today and whilst Watkiss recognises that Curle's addition would be good for the club, he would like to make a more permanent sigining.
"Keith's experience would be great for us, especially as we are light on numbers there at the moment. I am awaiting a phone call today regarding another centre half who would be available on a longer deal and I would be more interested in getting him in."
Curle didn't take part in the reserve match yesterday which the lads won 2-1 at Rushden and Diamonds.
Mark Carter and Iyseden Christie got the Stags goals, but Neil Richardson says the game wasn't the greatest. "Conditions were tough, it was very hot out there, but the football from both sides wasn't great. We'll have to be better, but at least we've got a win."
