Stags lined up with a 4 3 3 formation in front of a very good away following all anticipating the long awaited turn round in away form. With the crowd well lubricated and only a short walk from the watering hole they were in good voice as usual.
Stags dominated the first half really, only on occasions did Alty threaten Mazza, the game sparked into life on 7 mins when Matt Somner intercepted a pass moved forward and hit a great drive which the Alty keeper could only palm away at full stretch but on hand was Kyle Perry to smash the ball high into the roof of the net sending the away faithfull wild, could this be the turn round we had all come for.
Alty were enterprising in their response but Mazza never looked under any real threat. Then all hell let loose. Matt Doughty was guilty of a bad foul on Silky, with big Pezza bearing down on what looked like he was going to kill Doughty, up steps Senior to floor Pezza with a move that a WWF wrestler would have been proud of. Senior rightly received his straight red but not before Mr Halliday had given Doughty a yellow for the foul.
The Stags controlled the rest of the first half with no real problem, but the Stags faithfull wanted more against 10 men, but there was a sense of satisfaction that we had gone in 1-0 up with the anticipation that the manager would work his magic and we would dominate the rest of the game.
Half Time 0-1
Well the second half couldn't have started any better Louie (lets have disco) chased a ball into the box on the left hand side, it looked like the keeper was favorite to get the ball but Louie some how managed to lift the ball over him with his right foot. Fantastic it was on, we should get a cricket score now surely!!
The Stags seemed to sit back a little, little moans were heard in the Stags faithful has Alty seemed to gather momentum. Then we were gifted another big boost Doughty received his second yellow, yes! we were playing 9. This was it, surely we would hammer them!!
Wow I couldn't have been more wrong, Alty picked themselves off the floor and gave the Stags one hell of a game restricting the Stags to breakaways, which we should have exploited a lot more clinically. With thoughts of us with 9 against Cambridge way back when we were good, we started to panic, with just cause, sub Aaron Burns beat the Stags defence for pace and slotted home to give Alty big hope and get their crowd on the front foot. Oh no it couldn't happen could it!
Well Alty had the ball in the net again, they sent up their big defender who was causing problems, over came the ball Mazza went up with the big guy with the ball sailing into the empty net, only for the referee's assistant from 'Shirebrook' to come to our aid and disallow the goal to the dismay of the locals.
5 mins of added time was painful when really we should have had this put to bed with not breaking sweat.
Anyway a good away day in Alty was had by all, I think our strikers got the hair dryer treatment from David at the end, but he treated them to a couple of cans each and a few bottles of vino for the trip home from the local offy, probably to calm the nerves and not a reward.
Pack your buckets and spades were off to Eastbourne as the bandwaggon rolls on. Its great to be a Stags Fan, isn't it!!!
