REPORT BY SEAN THE MAD STAG

BLUNDER AT BLUNDELL

With Christmas 2007 & New Year 2008 nearly upon us & a belly full of Grimsby fish & chips, would there be any let up from the impending doom & gloom on & off the pitch that our beloved Stags have suffered throughout a totally disastrous 2007 here at Blundell Park this afternoon? 298 diehard & stayaway Stags fans gathered together on a freezing cold & grey Saturday afternoon in Cleethorpes.

With last week’s postponement of the Bury game, Billy Dearden named a changed team to face the Codheads. In came Browny on the left wing, with Jelleyman reverting back to left back. D’Laryea made his first full start since his injury comeback, partnering Dawson in centre midfield & Dearden keeping faith with the Boulding brothers’ combination up front.

The funniest thing happened during the team warm ups referee Michael Oliver & his 2 assistants knocked a ball about between them in front of the bemused Stags fans. Now I see why they try to officiate the game instead of playing it!!

Stags kicked off the game, attacking the goal behind which were their travelling fans.

As always the travelling Stags fans were in great voice.

Grimsby started the brightly taking the game directly to the Stags. In the 10th minute Grimsby had the first goal attempt when a mix up in the Stags defence allowed big frontman Gary Jones space on the edge of the penalty box, fortunately he blasted the ball over the bar.

Then started the amusing chants of “Haslam’s going down” & “You only sing when you’re fishing”, followed by a quality throw away comment of “We got better fish in Woodhouse”

Midway through the half Stags started to play the ball on the ground building slowly from the back with Bucko & Bap, which lead to series over corners, but we were seriously lacking creativity in the final third of the pitch.

The game looked like it was heading for a boring goalless draw.

HALF TIME: GRIMSBY 0 STAGS 0

Neither side made any substitution at half time & the game started tamely with both sides hoofing the ball up & down the pitch like a game of tennis.

On such hoof from Bap freed Mickey Boulding 1 on 1 with Grimsby keeper Barnes rushing towards him. Mickey lobbed Barnes & was clinically taken out for what looked like a definite penalty & straight red card. Much to my anger referee Oliver gave a corner instead & totally bottled the decision.

Much to the amusement of the noisy travelling Stags fans the Grimsby fans burst into song for the first time in the match in the 55th minute.

In the 58th minute a brave diving header by Johnny Mullins cleared the danger of yet another Grimsby attack. Mullins needed treatment for a kick to the head, but bravely carried on.

On the hour mark Dearden replaced Mullins with Martin McIntosh, a tactical move, which would cost us the game. Bap replaced Mullins at right back.

2 minutes later with Mickey Boulding dreadfully losing out in midfield & Bap had totally switched off at right back, Hegarty crossed easily from the Grimsby left straight to the lethal Gary Jones, who buried his header in high into the net to give an undeserved 1-0 lead.
All throughout the game Jelleyman was having a total nightmare, getting caught out of position all of the time & in my opinion was the worst defensive performance from a Stags player since Laurel & Hardy (Oops I mean Moore & Lever). Jelleyman is not fit to wear a Stags shirt.

Despite the introduction of McCrouch (McAliskey) in the 70th minute Stags didn’t look like scoring in a month of Sundays.

In the 80th minute penalty number 2 was turned down by the inept referee Oliver when McAliskey flicked on a ball into the onrushing Dawson, who clearly upended.

The game petered out & the alarm bells rang for the 298 Stags fans that relegation is a very realistic possibility.
