REPORT BY SEAN THE MAD STAG

BUCKO IS OUR LEADER, AS 10 MAN STAGS HOLD OUT FOR A POINT

Claire and I arrived in the ground 25 minutes late after getting stuck in traffic in Stockport!!!

We were greeted with the chant of “Keith is ripping us off again” and the Stags following were in fine voice. Once in this tiny ground standing on the terrace behind the goal that Stags were defending in the first half, I was quickly told that Conlon had been sent off for kicking out at a Chester defender & that it was still nil – nil, much to my relief.

Looking at the team, Baptiste had obviously overcome his back injury to take the place of the injured Mullins at right back with Hjelde coming into the centre of the defence, otherwise the team was unchanged.

In the 32nd minute Gritton was fouled on the right hand edge of the Chester penalty area. Hamshaw floated in an excellently flighted ball into the box towards Bucko, Bap & Hjelde, Bucko rose the highest & powered an unstoppable header into the bottom right hand corner of the net out of the reach of Chester keeper Danby, which sparked jubilant goal celebrations amongst the Stags fans. Then started the chant of “We’ve only got 10 men” “We only need 10 men” & “Bucko is our leader”

Chester piled on the pressure on the Stags goal & it was Captain Marvel Bucko to the rescue with not just 1 but TWO goal bound blocks. Chester forced 2 successive corners, which was well defended. Bucko was shouting & geeing up his fellow Stags players & organising them. A chant went up from the Stags fans of “Bucko for Chairman”

HALF TIME – CHESTER CITY 0 STAGS 1

Chester came of the blocks in the 2nd half quicker & piled loads of pressure on the Stags goal.

It appeared that Billy Dearden had sent his players out to get all bodies behind the ball & hit Chester on the counter attack with Martin Gritton carving out the lone furrow up front & sit back on the 1 goal lead.

Stags did have various chances to increase their lead but didn’t take their chances.

Just after the hour mark Chester’s pressure finally paid off when a ball into the area found veteran ex-Orient hitman Luke Steele, who rounded Jason White & chipped in the equaliser.

I felt that we’d be very lucky to get anything out of the game once Chester scored. But, lady luck shined on Stags for once. Steele fell down dramatically in the Stags penalty area under a Buxton challenge, no penalty was given & Steele was booked for diving.

A massive let off came when Chester won yet another corner late on & Chester defender headed the ball in the Stags net, only it to be ruled out for pushing.

A very amusing chant went up from the Stags “I’d sooner vote for Jade than Alan Meale”

Jason White kept Stags in the game with a couple of fine saves & I was nervously looking at my watch wishing for the final whistle.

Stags did use 2 subs in the last 10 minutes of the game. Mickey Boulding on for Brown (80) & Calum Lloyd for a very tired Gritton (85)

Lady luck definitely shined on Stags when a bicycle kick by a Chester player rebounded off the post & cleared to safety.

Stags did eventually hold out for a thoroughly deserved point after 3 anxious minutes of injury time.

Throughout the game the Stags fans were singing “Justice for Westwell”

Hamshaw – 8 great cross in for the goal
