The Stags progressed to Round 2 of the Carling Cup with an excellent victory at the Galpharm Stadium. Surprisingly Stags boss Peter Shirtliff resisted the temptation to blood a few fringe players and made just one change from the side so unfortunate not to win at Grimsby on Friday night, Jason White making his first appearance for the Stags in goal. This meant the Buxton/Baptiste central defensive pairing, which worked well at Grimsby, continued in the absence of Hjelde.
The first half was a fairly cagey affair, with the Stags just about on top without ever creating a clear cut chance. In the early exchanges White was called upon a couple of times to clear corners whilst at the other end Brown cut in from the left only to see his powerful shot blocked by a Terriers defender. We had to wait until ten minutes before the break for the first meaningful goal attempt, Schofield picking the ball up 20 yards out and firing a low shot which Jason White managed to palm past his right hand post. This was as close as the home side came to scoring all evening. A minute later the Stags almost took the lead after a fine move involving Jelleyman, Boulding and Brown. Jelleyman brought the ball out of defence, saw the quick run of Boulding who then slid a nice ball into the inside left channel for Boulding, it appeared Barker had to slide home the cross but he just couldn't get to the ball and it flew wide for a goal kick. However, the home sides reprieve didn't last long as with their next attack, the Stags took the lead. Barker flicked on Dawsons cross, the stretching Clarke could only head the ball across his own goal where Boulding beat Glennon to the ball to lob the ball home. It was a goal the Stags deserved right on the stroke of half-time. Half Time 0-0 Within three minutes of the restart the Stags were two up. D'Laryea hit a long, hopeful ball from mid-way inside his own half, Brown looked offside but made no attempt to get to the ball so the flag stayed down. This allowed Barker to challenge Clarke, rob the defender of the ball and then from an acute angle slide the ball home off the inside of the far post. Almost immediately Andy Booth replaced Taylor-Fletcher but it was still the Stags who looked most dangerous, particularly through the pace of Brown. Indeed, it was the Stags striker who had the next attempt on goal, released by a deft chipped pass from Hamshaw, he fired a powerful shot from the right hand edge of the penalty area which Glennon managed to acrobatically tip over the bar. It was still the Stags on top, a succession of corners for the visitors ended when Barker, ten yards out, headed powerfully towards goal but only straight at Glennon. As the half wore on the home side began to get into the game and threatened to pull a goal back. Booth headed over from a left wing cross, whilst former Spireite Beckett hit the ball fully 15 yards over the goal much to the delight of the travelling band of Stags fans at the opposite end of the pitch. The Stags were almost caught out on the counter attack when Collins burst through on the left, his low cross caused some confusion inside the Stags area with both White and Baptiste getting in each others way, but Jelleyman was on hand to clear. In injury time Abbott had a fine chance to give the home side a consolation, but his right foot volley again flew into the empty stand behind the goal. Another hugely impressive display from the Stags, who played the better football throughout. Again midfield was very strong, this time D'Laryea the pick of the impressive four. Defensively the Stags had few worries, Jason White did well and the Buxton/Baptiste partnership were solid. The goal will do Barker some good after his poor display on Friday and Browny was a threat throughout the game. Howevr, man of the match was John Mullins, who was outstanding all evening.
