LATE STRIKE DENIES STAGS DESERVED REWARD
Steve Hartshorn at Blundell Park Stags were undone by yet another late goal, which denied them at the very least a deserved point at promotion favourites, Grimsby Town. Mansfield had fallen behind as early as the 9the minute with a goal from Michael Reddy, but a penalty on 79 minutes by Richie Barker looked to have given Stags just reward for a dominant 2nd half display until with just four minutes remaining, Andy Parkinson popped up to hit the Mariners late winner. The Stags squad had been boosted by the acquisition of Danny Reet from Sheffield Wednesday, who found a place on the bench as Stags boss Peter Shirtliff looked to begin a heavy period of games with three welcome points against one of the League’s top sides. Stags began brightly with plenty of possession and after good work, Rundle fired the ball across the area where Stephen Dawson connected well but blazed over. On 9 minutes though The Mariners took the lead. Parkinson fed the ball through to Reddy who sped away from his markers to confidently fire the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal giving Pressman no chance whatsoever. Mansfield were denied an equaliser on 17 minutes. A free kick from Rundle was headed back across goal by Barker to Russell who was frustrated to see his deflected shot cleared off the line by Rob Jones. Gareth Jelleyman became the first player to be booked when he fouled Gary Cohen as the 1st half dourly ebbed away without either side controlling the play for any period of time. However three minutes from the break, Reddy should have added a second for the home side but put his effort wide from a free header and after Jones had headed over his own bar from a Russell cross, Barker put Rundle’s corner wide of the mark. In added on time, the dangerous looking Cohen powerfully shot from 18 yards but Pressman got fully behind the effort. The 2nd half started brightly again for the visitors when Barker had a header from a rundle cross deflected just over the crossbar. On 57 minutes Stags new boy, Danny Reet came on for Adam Russell. On 60 minutes former Notts County stopper, Steve Mildenhall was forced into action when a Rundle corner was cleared as far as Dawson who let fly with a thunderous effort that was parried away by the keeper. The Mariners were under pressure from The Stags, but had an opportunity of adding a second but after Parkinson had turned Buxton, the ball broke to Bolland who tamely shot towards goal and Pressman saved easily. D’Laryea did well to set up Barker but the Stags top goalscorer screwed his effort just wide of the home goal. Birchall came on for Rundle on 64 minutes. New boy Reet did his best to upset the home crowd when he clashed with Jones as the defender tried to usher the ball out for a goal kick. Jones reacted with anger but Reet was confronted face to face by Mildenhall who raced over to get involved. The Referee booked the Mariners keeper but failed to even speak to Reet. On 75 minutes Coke was introduced for D’Laryea as Stags stepped up the pressure on the home sides goal. Mildenhall again denying Dawson and from the follow up, Birchall’s effort took a deflection but the Referee failed to award a corner. Stags got their deserved equaliser on 79 minutes. A scramble in the box saw the ball brake to Coke who just before getting in his effort was cruelly chopped down by Bolland. Both players required treatment before Barker stepped to slot away his fifteenth goal of the season. Grimsby bounced straight back and were denied when Reddy's header was ruled out by the linesman’s upheld flag. Mariners manager, Slade made a double substitution on 81 minutes bringing on Croft and Gritton for Bloomer and Jones. Alex John-Baptiste became the 2nd Stags player to go in the book when he fouled Cohen but Newey’s 30-yard free kick was taken well by Pressman. On 86 minutes though, The Stags good work was undone by a lack of concentration in defence. Newey was allowed to run with the ball before setting up Reddy for a shot. Pressman did well to get down and parry the effort, but the loose ball broke nicely for Parkinson who made no mistake from seven yards. Buxton had Stags last chance of the game, but when the ball broke to him, he shot high over the crossbar. As the final whistle blew the cheers from the home support were mixed with relief as the old saying that all the sides at the top get all the luck once more came to the fore. It was cruel on a Mansfield side that had clearly been the better of the two sides in the 2nd half and at the very least deserved a point from the game. Man of the match – Jake Buxton |

Pressman 7 – Had no chance with either goal other than that had little or nothing to test him.
Buxton 8 – Good going forward and defended well. Unlucky not to score late on. John-Baptiste 6 – Did okay but let himself down with his distribution. Hjelde 7 – A mixture from Olav, but his experience helped him out a few times. Jelleyman 6 – Not his best game in Stags colours could have supported Rundle more. Uhlenbeek – 6 – Had trouble with the left back. Disappointing, expected more. D’Laryea 6 – Showed some good touches but seemed to lack drive. Dawson 8 – Good game in the centre was unlucky to be denied by the Mariner's keeper. Rundle – 6 – Looked well up for it in the 1st half but faded dramatically. Russell 6 – Slightly disappointing although not many chances came his way. Barker 7 – Held the ball up well, typical Barker performance. Took the penalty well. |
