Ok they're ok for YT outings but first team would get zero value in them. Away friendlies for first team need to be at places of the standard of Clownty, Grimsby, York, Harrogate and Altrincham. Decent standards (especially Harrogate, who're the same standard as us if not better) to test the players being as though we have just the one home friendly against decent opponents.

We don't want folk coming on here saying, 'we're struggling because PS was was Tommy' etc, etc after 10 games. So we have to find decent quality to play.

Basking in the late evening sunshine watching our team cane Gainsboro 7- 0 whilst troughing a tray of chips down us won't be a useful outing now the play at the level AFC do. We may as well go to AFC, it'd help a local club out if that's the standard of friendly we're looking at.

I don't think that all friendlies need to be against clubs close to our level. Many of our squad will be far from match fit, and Nigel will want to ease them back in whilst trying out new players in various roles. It gives an opportunity to view a range of tactics and formations in action, check our weaknesses and generally gather information. Obviously the opposition needs to be at a reasonable level, but Worksop, Gainsborough and so on will be fine. There's more chance of seeing how changes pan out if we have most of the play.

A couple of matches against better opposition would be sensible as well, but mostly to get players fully up to speed close to the season start.

So if we're taking an 11 to AFC on the 17th we'll be also be sending another 11 to somewhere like Buxton.

Ed Walker from the D3D4 podcast and Burton fan asked me jokingly on Twitter if the Matlock friendly had been announced yet, which Nigel usually takes his dog to! So that may be a candidate.

Last time we were allowed in for friendlies we got to see Rangers and Forest youth team, so there’s not much competition.

I dont think any friendlies get the pulse racing.

It does allow some to write players off after one game though

Friendlies are a exercise program to build a players fitness level up, and no more, and injuries are not to be risked, playing local clubs give them a boost and put our players in the real world of grass roots football, mixing it up to play someone above our league gives our lads a taste of the skills and ability needed at a higher level.
Coventry finished 16th in the Championship higher than Forest or Derby, and next season are back in the Ricoh.
We could play Arsenal but having previous experience of these games you just run around trying to get the ball off them, you could get that running around the local park
Coventry will do nicely.

But shirley if you're running round trying to get the ball back off the Arsenal then you are achieving what your first sentence states aren't you ?
