Anybody who comes on here and says this is the worst team we have ever had never had the pleasure of watching that side or the terrible teams in the early Conference years.
Rod Arnold was stretchered off and The Stags were hammered 6-1. Gary Nicholson scored the only goal for the Stags. Our team did include the young Colin Calderwood, the maverick entertainer that was Dave Caldwell and the stylish John Matthews. Our squad included Joe Laidlaw who along with Frank Wignall may be the most overweight players I've seen playing for the Stags. Frank Wignall did score some goals though.
Rod Arnold
Mark Reynolds, Billy Ayre, Colin Calderwood, Keith Kennedy
Bobby Hutchinson, Charlie Bell, John Matthews, Gary Nicholson
John Dungworth, Dave Caldwell
Simon Woodhead came on as a sub. I cannot remember who replaced Rod Arnold in goal. Joe Laidlaw would have been the ideal candidate as he would have filled it. Did John Matthews or Billy Ayre go in goal?
Mark Reynolds was 16, Colin Calderwood was 17 and Simon Woodhead 19.
York City finished 7th that season and then romped the league the season after. Gary Ford was probably playing for them.
Another lowlight was Ian Greaves' team getting smashed 7-1 away at Aldershot in Feb 1984. Did anybody go that game? Did Martin go?

This one for me....I'd been taken to my first Mansfield game by my grandad the week before and already thought Sandy Pate and Peter Morris were God's then this happened. ...remember grainy pics on TV. ..

Yes but at least we avenged that one by beating them 4 1 at the mill a year later
