Stags Most Embarrassing Result?

Postby Gruff » Sat Mar 27, 2021 8:00 pm

Given that our prestigious neighbours probably recorded their most embarrassing defeat today (losing to Hornchurch), I was wondering which memorable defeat you would class as our worst, in the time you have been supporting the Stags?

I can't see beyond the 1976 defeat to Matlock.

... but we did receive a bit of a thumping by Cheaterfield in the play-offs one year

Which one still haunts you?

Clear winner.

Hayes and yeading

Closely followed by our 3 2 win against alfreton when they had 9 men. It was a win but it was tragic

Hayes and Yeading defeat is the worst I ever experienced, trudged away that day thinking it’s going to take a monumental effort to escape the Conference. Thank goodness Coxy and Green got us out of that hell hole.

In terms of a football league fixture, losing 4-2 with considerable ease at home to Barrow this season was a particular low. Arguably one of our worst since returning to the EFL.

I can remember that night when Matlock beat us 5-2 at field mill... I left in dismay at 4-2.. only for some stags fans raging and moaning that they had scored another whilst I was in the bus stop waiting for my bus home... possibly the most embarrassing result I can remember...

It was a kickstart for a great run that ended up with us as champions so a price that was worth paying

My first trip to Bootham Crescent on 17th November 1982 to watch Stuart Boam's team was a bad one for me. Anybody who comes on here and says this is the worst team we have ever had never had the pleasure of watching that side or the terrible teams in the early Conference years.

Rod Arnold was stretchered off and The Stags were hammered 6-1. Gary Nicholson scored the only goal for the Stags. Our team did include the young Colin Calderwood, the maverick entertainer that was Dave Caldwell and the stylish John Matthews. Our squad included Joe Laidlaw who along with Frank Wignall may be the most overweight players I've seen playing for the Stags. Frank Wignall did score some goals though.

Rod Arnold
Mark Reynolds, Billy Ayre, Colin Calderwood, Keith Kennedy
Bobby Hutchinson, Charlie Bell, John Matthews, Gary Nicholson
John Dungworth, Dave Caldwell

Simon Woodhead came on as a sub. I cannot remember who replaced Rod Arnold in goal. Joe Laidlaw would have been the ideal candidate as he would have filled it. Did John Matthews or Billy Ayre go in goal?

Mark Reynolds was 16, Colin Calderwood was 17 and Simon Woodhead 19.

York City finished 7th that season and then romped the league the season after. Gary Ford was probably playing for them.

Another lowlight was Ian Greaves' team getting smashed 7-1 away at Aldershot in Feb 1984. Did anybody go that game? Did Martin go?

John Matthews went in goal at York.

Yes I did go to the 7-1 defeat at Aldershot. From memory we won 5-2 at home with Dave Caldwell on fire.

Edit, I was right
