As long as we make significant progress, you give the manager the opportunity to carry on.

Every manager as always had the backing from the radfords.
No manager as had their hands tied by the board.
It's their ability to get results which seals their fate.

Bad luck  Give over, the bloke was utterly clueless. His transfer dealings in the Summer confirm that.

I think you will find a lot of GC's clueless signings will be retained by Nigel Clough Mark so they were probably not as clueless as you are making out. You are falling too easily into the results were bad so every player must be raspberry trap.

Nigel Clough has signed George Lapslie permanently and given a new contract to Harry Charsley. Ollie Clarke, George Maris, Jordan Bowery and Farrend Rawson will be retained by Nigel Clough and there is a good chance that James Perch and Stephen McLaughlin will still be here as well together with Jamie Reid. You could still have 6 or 7 GC signings in the team next season.

Corey O'Keeffe started the season well but has not been given a chance by Nigel Clough. Rollin Menayese also has plenty of potential but it looks like him and O'Keeffe will be on their way out although they could still impress in pre-season.

Most Stags fans would have signed Nicky Maynard as he was our top goalscorer from last season.

Marek Stech has been a disappointment in goal and Aaron O'Driscoll has never featured but he was just signed as a back up centre half.

If we can make just two or three quality signings then it could make a massive difference next season. Cambridge have had a good season mainly due to the influence of Hoolahan, Mullin and Ironside. Bolton have shot up the league after signing Dappy, Lee, John, Williams etc

Progression doesn't necessarily mean promotion. We were fourth in the league. A decent appointment to progress on that and we would be league one. We had two seasons of going backwards, which has left us with the weakest squad since we returned to league football. Worse still a lot of these players are on two year contracts. It will take at least four transfer windows before we get to where we were prior to the appointment of JD. That's why we are being asked to be patient.

Not to sack Clough if we don't get promoted next season. We'll never get anywhere with a philosophy of you get one summer to build your squad and one season to get promotion or bust, it's stupid.

We actually need to pick the right man, which I think we have this time and give him a few seasons to build something and not just expect instant success next year like we always do

A lot of the duds GC signed have 2 year contract so Nige is stuck with em anyway. If Jordan and Reidy are anywhere near regular starters next season then the best we can hope for is another stagnant season wallowing in the mud. Our (the players) mindset too has to change from utter, utter panic at the first sniff of adversity, to something where our players show they at least possess a spine and don't give opposing teams carte blanche to camp out in our half while we watching wait for the inevitable.

Good luck to him and Joe Dunne. Life’s too short to spend it hating or ridiculing people. It didn’t work out at MTFC, we all move on ...

He inherited the same squad that missed promotion by nothing and signed Cook and Maynard to get over the line. Their wages, as Sharpe alluded to the other day, were enough to suggest he had decent backing.

Ahhh I remember it like it was yesterday. All we needed were two strikers to get us over the line, but nobody saw our defence falling to raspberries every game did they

To say it didn’t work out for coughlan would be an understatement but it would be daft and foolish to wish him anything other than good luck in a new role (i even did that with flitcroft  )

hope it works out for him and he comes back a better coach

Not supported? Financially he absolutely was.

Agree about Reid, do not agree at all about Bowery and I do wonder what you have been watching the last few months  I'd say after a slow start he has been one of our most consistent performers and I am sure will figure in a lot of fans thoughts when they vote on player of the year - remarkable when you consider he had a thread named after himself where almost everyone took pot shots at him. I suspect summer will be about finding partners for Bowery rather than a replacement.

Wally Alert!!

Stags fans at it again.... how have we not clocked that building a successful team to challenge can take time. I can already feel this expectation of automatic promotion within one season with a new manager creeping in yet again.

Let Nigel make a few adjustments and see where we are... if were not challenging then he needs time, obviously, the only thing we have not tried with a manager.

I hear what you're saying Sedgy, but it can also be a bit of a myth that managers need time to make a club a success.

Mark Bonner, in his first managerial job, looks like he is going to get Cambridge promoted. Based on their ppg last season, they would have finished a full season on 56 points. We could end up with a better tally, but in the worst case scenario not far behind. This season they will finish 77 and 83 points.

Mike Duff took over Cheltenham in Sept 2018 and led them to 16th in his first season, with 57 points (again, close to our final tally this season). They were set for 82 points the following season when it was curtailed, and lost in the play-offs. Another example that the type of improvement we are looking for is possible. Of course, this season they have been promoted and will finish with somewhere between 78 and 87 points.

Ian Evatt is looking like he will get Bolton up in one season.

Derek Adams took over Morecambe in November 2019, and was on track for 40 points at the time the season was curtailed. A much lower total than we have managed this term. This season, they will finish 72-78pts. A massive improvement, from a much more position than we are currently in, and with a much lower budget.

So, there is plenty of evidence that a good manager can rapidly improve a team within a season and a half. There is no reason why people should not be expecting a play-off tilt.

That doesn't mean we should be looking for a new manager if we're not promoted next season though.

Looking at the roller coaster ride most clubs have in Managers or the continental approach Head coaches patience is sadly lacking , Like a great building foundations have to be laid
from the Academy, player recruitment, Infrastructure,, Budget available, Discipline, and all these pieces have to fall in place to finish the puzzle.
New People can come in and make changes and results can improve, but in the long term things can become unstuck, failure to bring young players through, [increase in wages ]
Failure to bring in competent players [Discord in the dressing room ] not paying attention to none playing problems [can bring additional cost ] Also spending to much on wages or transfers
[ if promotion fails, less budget for following season ] and discipline [ player power can damage team spirit ] all these issues can mean in 18 months we need a new manager.
Its a merry go round to boom and bust,
Bolton going into league 1, believe me is not good for a club their siz
Derby are one of many that show changing managers is not a route to success , Bristol rovers have had 3 this season now relegated to league 2
