Surprised to see Billy Bingham down there.....Now where is that “ Bring back Dave Smith” banner we used to see in the west stand terrace in the seventies.....He was probably the best ever manager Stags had...even though the stats don’t prove it. IMHO.

He took over when Judas Morris walked out. We were in what is now the Championship. The point proves that stats don’t tell the whole story

The stats are merely the win rate, obviously important at the time. But comparing managers needs to have some sort of context attached.

So for instance if we are trying to stay in a division after promotion and haven't got the finances to compete, a win rate just good enough to keep us up would be a good result. If we then got relegated and next season had a lot of investment, the same win rate would be poor.

If all else stays the same and a manager's win rate means that we drop from promotion contenders to a relegation battle, it's a much worse performance than the same win rate where a manager is brought in to try and stave off relegation.

So the table is interesting, and broadly the best managers are in the top half, but there are anomalies. Unfortunately, Coughlan is still the worst after taking into account the context. No anomaly there.

Billy Bingham was an awful manager for the Stags after Dave Smith and Peter Morris and according to Kevin Bird tried to benefit personally by selling Mansfield's best players. He tried to sell Kevin Bird to Blackburn Rovers but Kevin Bird refused to meet the Blackburn representatives if Billy Bingham was going to be involved in the transfer so it never happened.

It's daft to label Morris as a 'Judas'. He was almost certain to get sacked at the end of the season, if he lasted that long, and had the chance to be assistant manager at Newcastle. He'd have been a fool not to take the job. Remember this was an era when the staff at lower league football clubs weren't commanding the insane wages they get now.

Billiy 'Bawbag' Bingham on the other hand was a terrible manager for the Stags.
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
