Although only Adam Murray got off to a good start as shown above, none of those would have resulted in relegation if the rate continued throughout the year. We also had at least double our current points total in each of those years.

If our current points rate continues, we will finish on 27 points and certain relegation.

This season is Stags worst start (6 games) since 1971/72 season  when after 6 games we had just 1 point.
However, Stags did win the 7th game, 1-0 v Aston Villa, away at Villa Park.

This season is Mansfield Town's worst start to the season for 49 years. In 1971-1972 we only had one point in Division 3 (League 1) after 6 games but the Stags then went and beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park in front of a crowd of 28,112. Dai Jones came on as a sub for John Bingham who required 9 stiches in a cut ankle and scored the only goal. Aston Villa won the league that season and only lost two home games. The Stags did not win another game until November when they beat York City 2-1 away and did not win at home until they beat Chesterfield 2-1 on New Years Day with goals from Frank Wignall and John Fairbrother. The Stags finished 21st and were relegated with 36 points (now 44 points) (P46 W8 D20 L18).

These stats show in glaring detail how awful this start to the season has been. I started supporting Stags in 1971 and I haven’t been as frustrated since our drop into Non League.
Other data shows he is one of the worst managers in our history and after Saturday he is lucky that JR is so patient but I fear his days are numbered if we lose again tomorrow.

19% win rate is shocking and unsustainable.
Win rate this season is 0% and that's with his own team, up to the fitness levels he desires, his training regimes, his pre-season and his selections.

It's not pretty.

He has to change it significantly, starting tomorrow, to get something going.

To be honest he should have gone after the game Saturday.

If nothing else it backs up my theory that JR has had enough of football.

This season is now arguably Mansfield Town's worst league start to the season for 106 years as we have gone 7 league games without a win. In 1914-1915 the Stags failed to be re-elected to the Central Alliance. Loughborough Corinithians (15 votes) and Holwell Works (10 votes) were elected ahead of Mansfield Town and Peterborough City (7 votes each). A second vote was required for the final league place which Peterborough City narrowly won by 20 votes to 19. Mansfield Mechanics voted for Peterborough and were now a league above Mansfield Town. The next item on the agenda at the AGM was for the expulsion of Mansfield Town for failing to implement ground improvements but it was not necessary as the Stags had been already voted out of the league. Holwell Sports subsequently resigned their place in the league as so many players had signed up to fight in World War I but the league decided not to replace them. The Stags had to apply for membership of the Notts & Derbyshire League.

Mansfield Town lost their first four games against Bolsover Colliery, Chesterfield Municipal Reserves twice and New Hucknall Colliery. They then drew against New Whittington Engineering, Staveley Town and Pinxton Colliery before losing to Staveley Town, South Normanaton and Alfreton Town before finally beating Alfreton Town 4-2 in their 11th league game on Boxing Day. They then went on a Paul Cox style finish to the season winning 11 of their last 15 games to finish 4th. They also lost 5-0 to Sutton Town in the FA Cup but did beat Mapperley 2-1 in the Notts Senior Cup on 21st November before getting knocked out by Notts County Reserves in the next round losing 2-0 at Meadow Lane.

Comparison After 7 League Games
2011-2012 (Paul Cox - 12 Points)
2012-2013 (Paul Cox) - 12 Points
2013-2014 (Paul Cox) - 12 Points
2014-2015 (Paul Cox) - 9 Points
2015-2016 (Adam Murray) - 12 Points
2016-2017 (Adam Murray) - 11 Points
2017-2018 (Steve Evans) - 10 Points
2018-2019 (David Flitcroft) - 10 Points
2019-2020 (John Dempster) - 9 Points
2020-2021 (Graham Coughlan) - 4 Points

Graham Coughlan
2019-2020 P15 W4 D4 L7
2020-2021 P7 W0 D4 L3
Total: P22 W4 D8 L10 (Win Rate 18%) Points Per Game: 0.9 (42 points per season)

I would suggest you can either use 3 points for a win or 2 points for a win to compare league tables across the years. Either way, 1971/72 was a worse start than 2020/21. So this the worst start for 49 years, not 106.

1996-97 after 7 games: W 0, D 4, L 3. GF 2, GA 8. Points 4. GD -6. Those two goals were scored in a 2-2 draw at Hartlepool in our third game. In game 8, the Stags travelled to Craven Cottage and beat Fulham 2-1.

This season is the first one in 24 years in which we haven't won any of our first seven League fixtures. Also noted that in my preview for the Cheltenham game.

7 1 1 5 also in 2002-03 and 1990-91 but the GD in 2002 was worse, GF 9, GA 22. In 1990, we had GF 5, GA 10 after seven goals. Finally, under the two-point ruling, 7 1 1 5 GF 8, GA 14, Points 3 in 1975-76. In 1971, we had scored 3 and conceded 12 after seven games.

My ranking after seven games (worst first):

2002-03: 7 1 1 5 9-22 (won our first game, 4-3 against Plymouth)
1983-84: 7 1 1 5 3-13 (first win in fifth game, 1-0 against Tranmere)
1971-72: 7 1 1 5 3-12 /two point ruling, first win in game 7, 1-0 at Aston Villa/
2020-21: 7 0 4 3 6-10
1990-91: 7 1 1 5 5-10 (won our opening game 2-0 at Wigan)
2007-08: 7 1 1 5 9-15 (first win in fourth game, 4-2 against Stockport)
1975-76: 7 1 1 5 8-14 /two point ruling/first win in second game, 2-0 at Colchester
1996-97: 7 0 4 3 2-8

Details checked.

I'm going on wins Martin which is why I said it is arguably the worst start for 106 years. I had missed 1996-1997 though so it is the joint worst start in 106 years. We also won our 8th game in 1996-1997 with a 2-1 win at Fulham.

GC needs a win quick. He may just about survive 8 games without a win but I cannot see him surviving 9 games without a win if we fail to beat Barrow at home next Saturday.
