Barnsley U23 0 Mansfield Town 4

Scorers: Danny Rose, Harry Charsley, Farrend Rawson and an own goal.

Did we score from a set piece?

STAGS' XI:
Stech
Menayese, Rawson, Sweeney
O'Keeffe, Perch, Maris, Charsley, Benning
Rose (Scott 75'), Cook.

That's £10 they could have had off me

I assume there the only teams we could with late notice, we were meant to be playing lincoln last Saturday, not preston so things would of had to change.

Well done. Four goals and a clean sheet. Despite the quality of the opposition, it will be a confidence boost.

These u23 squads are a good test. They are players who are pushing for a start in the first team and need to impress. They will all want to play first team football and if they shine against us they could be selected for their first team or even we could be interested in a loan. Think of it this way, players generally sign pro firms on or around their 17th birthday, some of these players have been professionals for 5 or 6 years. Granted I've not seen their team so can't say but with it being a friendly they could have played some senior pros as well.

We’ve put out our possible 1st team If we can’t beat a bunch of Rookies U23s I’d be most worried..

To be fair u23 sides aren't a real test. I'd be worried if it wasn't 4 nil too.

I think we needed a couple of games like this, for confidence if nothing else. Good to see goals coming from all areas of the team too. Does anybody know if there will there be any highlights of the last two games?

I do a lot of Under 23 games and it’s not just players who are under 23. You also get other players who are coming back from an injury, players who aren’t fit enough for the first team and also players who are either a new signing or simply out of favour. I remember doing a Forest U23 game and it was like a first team game as half the team were the ones who were out of favour. Players like Daryl Murphy, Zach Clough, Jamie Ward, Jordan Smith & Joe Worrall played and they were first team players under a previous manager.

I think Liam Bridcutt, Zach Clough, Daryl Murphy, Jason Cummings and Jordan Smith played against the Stags last pre-season.

Jordan Smith has just signed another 2 year contract at Forest.

JD was heavily criticised for playing too many U23 games and not being ready for Newport, Morecambe, Leyton Orient, Stevenage, Exeter etc which in hindsight was a pretty easy start to the season.

Let's see how the first month pans out before we say 'pre season's been crap'. I class Preston as pre season too as we were forced to play early. If we get tonked in the first few games of the proper season then by all means light up those torches and sharpen those pitchforks.

Not dissimilar to the PNE game, I bet they'd be thinking the same;

"only a league 2 side who haven't played for 6 months, no pre-season to speak of and a completely new squad. I'd be worried if it wasn't 4-0".

Really? We don't want to be trying to chase another manager out the door after he's just built a new squad if we have a poor start.

I've said it before, but the past few years have just been rebuild jobs after rebuild. We've had players here who have been here under about 3/4 different managers which isn't always great. Coughlan needs time

I think this Man City game could do us well, if we win that comfortably, it will give us a massive boost ahead of the Tranmere game.

Man City U21 beat Rochdale, Bradford and Shrewsbury last season, losing to Bolton, and then losing to Scunthorpe in the last 16.

Also, the game taking place four days before the new season, I can see a weakened side being put out.
