if you're not able to watch the interview, I've transcribed a couple of bits here:

Alex MacDonald spoke to Ian Abrahams (Moose) on TalkSport, Fri 05 June 2020

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I was going to leave, I didn’t think I was going to get released.
“My regret when I look back at my time, is not leaving the club in a position that, three years ago when I joined, the vision was.
“I can’t say a bad word about the football club, and certainly not the owners. I had a love for the football club, and a love for the area.
“In January, I had a chance to move to a League One club, on a longer contract. I had one conversation with the manager and I threw it out, I wasn’t interested in it. I never wanted to go.
“Now I’m hoping to get a new chapter started, sooner rather than later.”

Should have kept him...one of the very few players that actually wanted to be a Mansfield player....and would have no doubt got much fitter under GC. On form under Fatty he was superb

I would have kept him but we don't know if money was the problem or not. He wasn't every body's cup of tea but I liked his energy and desire.
Maybe there are still clubs out there who want to pay him more than we can afford under what's becoming the new financial shape of things to come?

I was surprised he was released - on the face of it a GC type of player.
Good luck to the lad tho

He had lots of effort and tenacity and made a nuisance of himself but unfortunately lacked any real ability.

Would be a solid conference player

I thought he would of been kept on as it seems he was very much a GC kinda player. But the wages he was on (rumoured around £3500 pw) we could get three players who do the same job in his salary.

Too good for the conference by far ,he was certainly a tryer and i thought he would be retained ,with a couple of ball players around him i think he would be a vital cog in the middle of the park ,i loved his attitude and tenacity hope he goes on to prove us as a club wrong

His biggest problem was the change of position. He’s never been a top end league 2 centre mid.

Yes he was a GC type player but never looked a fit or fast enough GC player!!! Also very little end product.

It was Gillingham. Chances are, he will end up with them. From what I was told, he stayed after GC promised him that he would be here beyond the end of the season. Obviously a number of factors have come into play since January, so GC's position on him has changed for one reason or another.

I think I've been watching a different MacDonald to some of you, he was very average and first on my release list. However, I do wish him well as he always worked hard.

I agree. That plus his big injury. Often looked like a headless chicken last year but that was as much to do with the other players not being in sync with him when pressing. A shame as he had real quality, particularly on the right.

He was part of the worst midfield we have had for a few seasons , And the ones kept on are not much better .

My view is still, it's all about money. League 2 budgets are going to be squeezed there is no doubt. Unless you offer a player the same money, plus inflation, he has the right to walk away no questions asked.

When all is said and done, Macca wasn't worth the money, reportedly thousands a week, was a smaller offer made, has his agent got him a deal in L1 or L2 on better money, who knows?

I thank him for his efforts, the club have been good to him, he never regained the for he showed under Evans, maybe that's where he will end up, wherever Evans is next season. Can't imagine Gillingham keeping him on?

Thought it was lincoln but nonetheless no one is going to be chucking money around for players now. Especially our lot of repeated near misses. They were all happy to take the big money for no effort under Dempster and not stand up as “professionals”, hope they invested wisely.
