Update - League 2 clubs vote to end season

Postby Martin Shaw » Fri May 08, 2020 10:05 am

Exclusive: Leagues One and Two abandoned, clubs to vote how to decide places

The English Football League will next week tell clubs in Leagues One and Two there is no chance of playing any more games this season and ask them to vote on a method to decide promotion and relegation.

EFL chairman Rick Parry told MPs on the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee on Wednesday morning that a resolution to the season in the third and fourth tiers was only a matter of days away and it now seems a decision could come as early as Monday or Tuesday.

The Athletic understands the EFL board has already received several proposals from clubs, with the current favourite being a points-per-game (PPG) model weighted to reflect how many games the teams have played home and away.

The rationale for this idea is a non-weighted PPG calculation does not take into account the fact that some teams have four home games left, while others have six.

This season across the Football League, the home team has won 46 per cent of the time, with away...

Inevitable really.

No promotion or relegation. Promote Barrow to make up the numbers.

the Athletic article is suggesting there will be promotion and relegation, and it is just a matter of what method is used.

It's totally unfair to relegate anyone particularly now there are three teams in contention for the drop. So on that basis at least one team would have to be promoted to make space for Barrow. If more want to go up it would mean relegating teams from league one which would be unfair.

The only other solution would be to run with 25 teams whenever the season starts but that's more games.

this is worth a watch

Rick Parry says he expects three clubs to be promoted from the Championship to the Premier League. I think it is 99% clear that there will be promotion and relegation in each of the EFL Leagues, as per the Athletic article, and it's just how they will be determined.

Why only L1 and L2? Is the Championship not part of the EFL?

Personally from a Stags point of view, I’ve no interest in the rest of the season being played out. The quicker it’s over with the better, most of us have been saying that since December!

I would like to go on record thanking John Dempster and the players for ensuring that, as this season has unfolded into an ending no one could have foreseen, we are not having any heartache over how the promotion places are decided.

Seriously - please let this season end and let us put it behind us. Hopefully one that will be repeated.

See you all, ‘Don’t know where, don’t know when’ next season (hopefully).

Will the players want to play next season if there’s still no vaccine? If so I don’t understand why they can’t finish this one. Or will there be no next season? Either way a terrible season is over. Thank the maker!!!

Some of their fans are saying as there would be an extra space in the league due to bury rather than promoting barrow they should come back to the league as they finished 23rd last season

21 yrs since they were in the top division - not a great record for a ‘big club’.

The season was over as soon as it was cancelled. Course the authorities had to attempt to resurrect it, but it's over, and I haven't missed this season.

If anything, we need a long enforced absence from football to get us to fall in love with it again after the disappointment of last season, the Dempster appointment and the following shambles.

I think it’s the right decision to end it for sure, be interesting to see what happens with relegations and promotions or if the plan is there’ll be none.

In league 1 Wycombe would move from 8th to 3rd based on “points per game” average with their games in hand.
Cheltenham would overtake Exeter to 4th in our league too.

It wouldn’t surprise me if only the automatic places go up so one less team would come down.

ITS STARTED!!!!

Brighton technical director, Dan Ashworth has proposed that the league look again at the prospect of B Teams (of Premiership Clubs) being allowed into the pyramid to replace the ones that may be faltering due to financial reasons. This 'I've got loads but want more' attitude must not be allowed to fester and should be resisted at every level. Football is the people's game and not the plaything of a small priveliidged group who are only looking to cement their place at the top of the pyramid.

We already suffer from the effect of mega rich clubs dominating our game and sucking the money out of it. Imagine what would happen if those clubs also owned feeder clubs sweeping up the blossoming talent of players hoping to be part of their first team if they can shine. This suggestion should be resisted at every opportunity.

What a disgrace.

Too right. I haven’t missed football at all mate. Of any kind. Foregoing next season would be great too. We will look forward to it then.
