Yes I totally agree GB, I can't say anything about Mellis that hasn't already been said.

From Chelsea to Ipswich to Mansfield to Bolton - back to league 2 under hill and flitcroft (our of their control in fairness) he’s the reason he’s not doing well - mainly that he’s a tosspot.

Can't argue with any of that, but still better than anybody we have at Field Mill.

He's the ultimate annoyance though. Imagine someone with the quality of Mellis and the workrate of Macca - now you'd have a player - sadly each player only possesses one.

In short that's why I don't like Mellis - he was easily better technically than anyone in our midfield, but would maybe turn up 1 in 5 games (maybe not that) - he's doing a job that most folk would love to do and yet seems hellbent on throwing it away.

If he had both there's no way he'd be a L2 player though ;)

It's fairly commonplace that (at this level) almost all will have one or the other, and that's how clubs can afford em. There are a few exceptions (plucked from obscurity, end of career, etc), but otherwise it's generally L2 standard all the way. Anyone regularly playing above this level is usually snaffled within a season or 2 at most

You see it in all facets of sport and life.

I’ve seen naturally talented riders like Sean Emmett p1ss it up against the wall and achieve far less than less talented but far more disciplined riders like Toseland or Brad Smith

People do realise we are a league 2 club, not Barcelona dont they?
Anyone who scores a hatful of goals will be sold, or wont renew their contract, any goalie that makes lots of saves will leave, same with a solid defence, and if midfielders get assists, teams higher up will be interested in them. So you have to make do with flawed players who might perform one week and not the next, that is why they are at Mansfield Town! It would be lovely to have Liams, Bobby's and Leroys of old coming through our youth academy now though, because we have a owner who doesn't need to sell unless the price is right, or the player is unhappy. But that seems like it was a once rarity occurrence, weird when we now put more money into the academy than back then!

Not strictly true, the best defence in L2 last season are still here this season (at a greatly reduced performance level).

It’s going to take a good few years before we start seeing high calibre youth players come through...we’re not even cat 3 yet and no youth player has really been in our setup longer than 3-4 years at the most. Remember we had to start from scratch. This is a long term prospect not something that happens over a 2-3 year period.

And it's hard to blood youth players when we are trying to achieve promotion year after year

We've had more debuts given to youth teamers in the last year and a half or so than we probably had since returning to the league.

This is probably more to do with the rule that at least one player named in the matchday 18 must be developed by the club. Basically a rule forcing clubs to either have a kid on the bench or have only 6 subs available.

The rule says they must be registered at the club for a minimum of 12 months before the end of their under-19 season.

Good riddance. The players brought in by GC are hard working and committed in a way that Mellis isn’t.

Jacob Mellis came on as a 93rd minute sub in Bolton's 2-2 away draw at Burton Albion.

Agree with 1970 Stag and and we are more like Barrowcelona andI have been wallowing in the lower leagues with Stags since 1969 but of course if we go up and then go up again to the Championship maybe some of the ones that would normally move on will want to stay for a change.

Looks like they reviewed the case at Leicester court .

A trial has been set for November 30 at the Nottingham court. It is expected to last for two days.
