League 2 Accounts and Finances 2019-2020

Postby Tippy Tappy Football » Sun Jan 19, 2020 1:04 pm

Peter Swann, the Scunthorpe Chairman, said on BBC Radio Humberside yesterday that Scunthorpe United have a playing budget in excess of £3 million and they are now trying to reduce the playing budget over the next few seasons to get it to a third of the current budget. They have around 35 players in their squad. Swann says that he had a real go at it trying to get Scunthorpe into The Championship but they just fell short and he is now trying to make the club sustainable.

He also stated that because they are unlikely to make the play offs they will probably not sign any more players in the transfer window unless they can get players out the door. This means that they will probably not sign Junior Brown who is on loan from Coventry City.

Peter Swann used to own Gainsborough Trinity and is married to Karin Swann who is the neice of Tony Wilkinson who owns Wilkinsons (Wilkos). Karin Swann sold her 50% interest in the family business to Lisa Wilkinson, Tony Wilkinson's daughter, in 2014.

Interesting tweet from Andy Holt, Accrington Chairman, on income received from iFollow for first half of the season.

"TV income this year for @ASFCofficial will be £1,615,000 ish.

Just had our ifollow statement.
The grand total of £2566.98 so far.
Ifollow costs of £450.
Net income £2,116.98 for half a season.

The gamble is would we have sold 127 more tickets in 6 months without it?"

Another interesting tweet on iFollow income from Bristol Rovers Commercial Director, Tom Gorringe:

"We have generated over £70k from iFollow so far this season, of which the majority is for away games or international fans, so doesn’t impact ticket income. Of home games over 50% that purchased live more than 40miles away from the Mem. For us it is a positive revenue stream."

I would say Accrington have a more parochial fan base than Bristol Rovers and that’s why the Accy chairman is moaning.

I think the Accrington owner just likes moaning in general.

I thought Accy refused to join it initially? Looking at those figures it’s clearly not good business for them and they have a right to be miffed.

Andy Holt is right in saying that the home club should receive all the iFollow income for the match.

The only way that would work is if I follow matches could only be booked through the home teams website.

You pay iFollow for the game Pete whichever website you use so they can easily pay all the income to the home team.

But the system is set up that the club get money only from their own website.

I would imagine that trying to split the money on each game would be an administration nightmare.

I don’t understand that Pete. Ifollow collects the money through either company’s website. They would just then pay all that money to the home club, regardless of which portal it came from in the first place.

Peter Swann, the Scunthorpe Chairman, said on BBC Radio Humberside yesterday that Scunthorpe United have a playing budget in excess of £3 million and it is the 2nd largest in League 2.

Who has the largest playing budget? Bradford City? Plymouth Argyle? Northampton Town? Mansfield Town?

I don’t believe him Tippy.

My guess is Bradford and Plymouth are the only two above us.

The figures in the accounts back up his claims Conker. £6.4 million spent on total wages at the club in 2017-2018 (including £191,201 paid to directors). He says they are still paying massive League 1 wages and the plan this season was to off load players and reduce the playing budget. The ultimate aim is to get it down to a third of what it currently is by bringing through the U23 players.

Be interesting where we are, I think it’s likely our budget has continuously increased since Evans joined - Flitcroft and Dempster were also backed with big transfer fees and wages, not to mention the players we negotiated new contacts with under Flitcroft last season too.

It’s very embarrassing quite frankly, considering our league position.

Good point, after January I tend to agree with you. They had a quieter than expected summer mind.

It would have inflated. Every contract renewal would come with a pay increase. Many contracts come with pay rises included. Yearly pay rise by X% pay increase to a pay increase upn promotion to £x p/w after x amount of games. Agents/footballers negotiate these kind of terms all the time.

The point isn't just about pay increases - it's also about the increase in six figure transfer fees and big striker signings.

So yeah it's continuously since Evans joined, but it's to do with more than our 'retained' players, and although in Football manager yearly rises are very common there is absolutely nothing to suggest it's so common at Mansfield

Either way, it's embarrassing all considered!

Yeah I had to cut the reply short due to time. I was going to go on to say that transfer fees are rarely paid in full up front. Usually its split over 12 months or so and can also include player performance payments as well. A good case which was made public in regards to us was the details around our compensation for Sunderland taking Liam Lawrence.

Agent fees are another increasing outgoing. The cost of living goes up but football seems to have its own inflation rate.

David Artell says Crewe have the 3rd lowest budget in League 2. "I think we have the third lowest budget in the league but that's okay because only two go down, and it's one this season!"

David Artell says Crewe Alex having a new ownership will not result in a boost to his playing budget - and he's quite happy with that. A buyout of majority shareholder Norman Hassall will be completed in the coming weeks, with several new investors coming on board and new directors being appointed. It is been heralded as an exciting fresh dawn for the club, and the first meeting of the new board is due to be held on Friday. Artell says it's unlikely to make a difference to his day-to-day work on the football side, and does not expect to have any extra money to spend. But he says, at Crewe, he's afforded something far more valuable than cash - time.

Artell explained: "The main thing is that the financial burden will be shared more now, rather than it just being on three or four fellas who have given generously to this club over the past three or four years in particular. We want people involved who love the club as much as we do, and hopefully we've got the right people and we move forward. It's a great opportunity, because the money we make will be our own and not going elsewhere, and that can only be a good thing.

"But I won't be asking for more money. I think we have the third lowest budget in the league but that's okay because only two go down, and it's one this season! I hear what other managers have to spend and I shudder. It's no wonder they get sacked, but at the same time I can't believe they are given it. I knew that before I took the job, and I'm pretty certain there are plenty of managers who would swap money for two things I have: Time and the quality at my disposal. "I've been afforded time and I'm extremely grateful for that, it's worth more than the extra three or four million that other clubs have got."

It looks like Grimsby Town will be going for it next season despite Chairman and owner, John Fenty, taking more of a back seat role. The directors have signed off on their biggest ever League 2 budget.

Ian Holloway will be manager and Director of Football responsible for all football operations. John Fenty says:

"Ian Holloway (Ollie) with his vast experience intends to drive the Club forward both on and off the field, having special responsibilities as the director responsible for all football operations. He will have more freedom and autonomy to shape on-the-field matters than any other manager within the English Football League (one foot on the training ground and one in the boardroom)."

"The Board has signed off on our largest playing budget for next season at this level, although it’s fair to say there will be several bigger spenders in the division."
