League 2 Statistics 2019-2020

Postby Tippy Tappy Football » Wed Aug 21, 2019 4:47 pm

We are not dominating possession as much as we did last year which is worrying but this may also be down to the style of play as getting the ball forward quickly means we are more likely to lose possession. Lowest possession was at Carlisle (32%) but we won 2-0.

Interestingly the number of shots/attempts on goal has increased 48 v 40 but the number of shots by the opposition has significantly increased 55 v 40

This Season
Newport - Could have been 4-0 down at half time but ended up drawing 2-2 with 10 men (45% possession) (10 shots) (22 shots for Newport)
Morecambe - Could have been 4-0 down at half time but ended up drawing 2-2 with 10 men (58% possession) (18 shots) (8 shots for Morecambe)
Carlisle - A good 2-0 away win but did not create many chances. (32% possession) (6 shots) (14 shots for Carlisle)
Orient - Could have been 3-0 up at half time but ended up losing 3-2 (45% possession) (14 shots) (11 shots for Orient)

Last Season
Newport - Comfortable 3-0 win (57% possession) (11 shots) (14 shots for Newport)
Yeovil - 2-2 draw (52% possession) (14 shots) (11 shots for Yeovil)
Colchester United - 1-1 draw after needlessly conceding a late equalizer (61% possession) (4 shots) (4 shots for Col U)
Tranmere - Played well in a 0-0 draw. Had chances to win game. (59% possession) (11 shots) (11 shots for Tranmere)

Expected Goals (just to cheer Martin up  )

Newport County 2.4 Mansfield Town 1.5 (HT: 1.5 v 0.2)
Mansfield 1.7 Morecambe 0.8 (HT: 0.8 v 0.75)
Carlisle United 1.1 Mansfield Town 0.8 (HT: 0.6 v 0.65)
Mansfield Town 2.6 Leyton Orient 1.7 (HT: 1.8 v 0.25)

Based on xGs we should have lost at Newport, beat Morecambe, drawn at Carlisle and beat Orient (7 points)

Expected Goals

Newport County 2.4 Mansfield Town 1.5 (HT: 1.5 v 0.2)
Mansfield 1.7 Morecambe 0.8 (HT: 0.8 v 0.75)
Carlisle United 1.1 Mansfield Town 0.8 (HT: 0.6 v 0.65)
Mansfield Town 2.6 Leyton Orient 1.7 (HT: 1.8 v 0.25)
Mansfield Town 1.9 Stevenage 0.5 (HT: 0.65 v 0.4)

We are 5th in the league in xG table (W3 D1 L1) so we are definitely not getting our just deserts at the moment. It suggests that our results should improve if we keep creating the same amount of chances.

What utter raspberry. You can create all you want if can't take them.

Danny missed his easiest chance of the season yesterday and don't get me started on spanner foot McDonald when CJ laid him one on a plate!!

....but it proves the point Clanger that the Stags have not had the rub of the green so far and that's not taking into account having 9 players injured and three players suspended. Our results should improve soon if we can get key players back fit or get a few more quality players in the building.

Should being the operative word.
In a very good post constructed by Gavin Brookes on another thread, even when he had most fit you can't see any cohesion in the play or how he's trying to achieve it, it all looked pretty directionless to me.

I think TTFs first paragraph sums up my interpretation, we’ve gone more direct than we were under flitcroft. That has clearly helped Danny rose out as we’re closer to Evan’s style of play.

There becomes 2 issues there for me:
1 the fact that on Xg’s we would be higher up the league. Therefore we’re not clinical enough as Woody’s examples point out.
2 defensively we’ve not been the same as last season as the opposition have seen more of the ball and we seen teams able to counter attack us more effectively.

It then becomes a stick or twist situation, I think like we saw with Evans that this tactic may be more effective away from home and vs. teams that play higher up the pitch and less so vs. teams like Stevenage at home.
The other question I have is whether it’s the injuries and suspensions that have caused this or and intentional style change?

Mansfield Town 1.9 Stevenage 0.5 (HT: 0.65 v 0.4)
Exeter City 1.3 Mansfield Town 0.4 (HT: 1.2 v 0.2)

We are 9th in the league in xG table (W3 D1 L2 = 10 points)

According to xG, we should have beaten Morecambe, Orient and Stevenage, drawn with Carlisle and lost at Newport and Exeter. We are therefore under achieving by 4 points at the moment based on xG.

Morecambe were only expected to get 0.8 goals for all the chances they had !!! - bollux
I assume expected goals is calculated from the chances they had (the one that hit the bar from 60 yards would have been around 0.01?)
They should have been 4 or 5 up at half time. Their first goal alone would have been a 0.8 chance as it was from very close range.
The second was also a decent chance. Ball at good height to head and only keeper to beat who was in no mans land. That chance would have been 0.6 ish. They had other chances too.
First match : 04.01.1975 home v Cambridge Utd F.A.Cup 3rd Round 1-0 Clarke

Would of, could of, should of. It's 4th division football at the end of the day. The only stat that matters to me is the final score.
Then comes possession, shots, tackles, drinks breaks, times arses scratched etc etc.

Whoscored.com have announced they now have statistical date for League One and League Two teams, which is brilliant news. Will delve into it more later, but something that stands out straight away is that we are 4th highest in the league for long passes per game.

I think the reason for this is the back three have to go long, because the midfield are not ‘showing’ to accept a pass from the back three.
Those accustomed to privilege may feel that equality is oppression.

The only stat that matters is the score. Possession doesn’t always equate to victory. I am more bothered about our rubbish defending than any other stat atm. Playing tippy tappy boring sideways football doesn’t mean nothing.

We still have not improved at set pieces. One goal from a free kick at Newport although we scored from a quick restart at Carlisle and a corner in the League Cup against Morecambe.

Most goals from set piece situations - LEAGUE TWO

6 - Grimsby
4 - Salford
3 - Crawley
3 - Scunthorpe
2 - Port Vale
2 - Cambridge
2 - Leyton Orient
2 - Cheltenham
2 - Northampton
2 - Morecambe

Of course we don't get crosses in, there's no one out wide to do it.
We are playing narrow again as though we want to pass our way through but then we just hump it and hope.
All the stats on all the sites just back up he still hasn't got another 'style' he wants to implement, most had already worked that out bar the odd few.

I enjoy the stats.
3rd place for long balls and 0 goals from counter attack says everything we know about midfield.
Hopefully 5 more games and they will improve for the better.
Will be good to see the difference.
