What did they say?

Basically the local MP was wanting to know why it was in a mess and questioned what EFL and the National League where doing to save the club. She also mentioned that it was the oldest professional club in the world.

Why that should make a difference is beyond me.

But not the oldest football league club anymore

FOOTBALL | ROD LIDDLE
july 21 2019, 12:01am, the sunday times
Bailing out Notts County makes no financial sense, but one can only hope
Rod Liddle

England’s oldest football league club, Notts County, are now just 11 days from ceasing to exist. A mountain of unpaid debts mean they face liquidation, 157 years after they were formed.

It is entirely possible that the 3-1 defeat by Swindon on the final day of last season, a campaign that saw them relegated to the National League for the first time, will be the last time their players kicked a ball in anger. Technically, it’s a tax bill of a mere £250,000 which is seeing them dragged before the High Court once again. But the problems are a lot more serious than that.

The players and staff of the club have not been paid since May — and so are entitled to walk out as free agents before the next season begins. It is quite possible that the club will not be able to field a team to fulfil their league fixtures, and so expulsion awaits. County’s — er — colourful owner, Alan Hardy, is up to his neck in debt. His company, Paragon Interiors, was plunged into administration earlier this year, owing at least £13.5m. Mr Hardy has been trying to sell the club — for in excess of £5m, which would be steepish for a lower-level Championship outfit, let alone a club in the National League. The new owners would, of course, cop all of Notts County’s debts on top of the extortionate asking price. At the end of June, Hardy assured fans and players alike that they had no need to worry, a prospective buyer was in place and all would be sorted out by July 10. Unsurprisingly, you might think, nothing at all was sorted out by July 11 and still nobody has been paid.

You may or may not remember Hardy’s previous claim to fame, which was to send out a tweet to fans of the club showing him with his old fella flapping about in the breeze (“an honest mistake”, he explained, somewhat red of face).

Hardy put the club up for sale in January and seemed to have found a suitable buyer quite quickly in a consortium led by a chap called Alex May. This foundered a little when it was discovered that Mr May previously went under the name Alick Kapikanya and had been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a £3.5m mortgage scam. Kapikanya’s modus operandi was to steal the identities of elderly homeowners and consequently nick their houses before re-mortgaging them and then pocketing the dosh.

Even by the Football Association’s somewhat lax standards, it is hard to imagine Alex/Alick passing their fit and proper test. According to Hardy, there are new prospective buyers, but he won’t tell anyone who they are (it is whispered that they might be “Danish”). Frankly, anyone who would pay the sort of sum Hardy has been asking would fail to pass my “fit and proper” test, unless it was a “fit and proper” test to gain entry to the nearest booby hatch.

Lilian Greenwood, the MP for Nottingham South, has at least been doing what she can to find out what is going on at Meadow Lane. At prime minister’s questions she called for an investigation into Notts County’s affairs by the Football Association, the Football League and the National League. As a consequence she is meeting the FA in Westminster on Tuesday. But both supporters of the club and the Nottingham Post have been serially frustrated by the failure of any of the footballing authorities to take much of an interest in Notts County’s plight. The Post forwarded to the FA a secret dossier supplied by a club insider concerning Notts County’s financial issues. But having been told that the FA would look into it, nothing more has been forthcoming. It is heartening, mind, that Nottingham has both an MP who takes an interest and a local paper prepared to do a bit of digging and campaigning.

If Notts County go into liquidation, as seems highly likely at the moment, then the best fans can hope for is its resurrection as a “phoenix” club, perhaps owned largely by its supporter base. That would mean a change of name and relegation several divisions down to the Evo-Stik Premier League.

What is the cause of Notts County’s parlous state? The short answer is that they spent beyond their means. In the 2017-18 season, in particular, they were heavily fancied as favourites for promotion from Sky Bet League Two, the consequence of a large squad and generous individual salaries. As a gamble, this almost worked: they finished fifth in the division only to lose in the playoff semi-finals to Coventry City.

But almost was not good enough and it may prove to be the death of them. Added to which, of course, is that old truism — that the only people who would wish to own a lower-league club are the very people who should never be allowed to run any sort of business. I repeat, buying Notts County for five million, or even five grand, does not make much financial sense. It is a minor miracle that so many of these smaller clubs are still in existence.

Maybe Juventus can bail them out. They have an historic link, based on relative antiquities and similar strips. It would be cheering if someone did.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

That may well be but it is quite a realistic article and he's spot on with the likely outcome.

Not convinced about liquidation, last minute places into admin and interested buyer picks it up a lot cheaper than egghead currently wants would be my bet. Whether that leaves it too late to start the season or with a points deductions who knows

I don't think there is time for a takeover unless it is already at an advanced stage.

The application is for a winding up order which will be granted unless the debt is paid in full. That would mean someone paying the thick end of a million before they are in control of the club and I can't see that happening unless they are a die hard fan.

Interesting reading Notts County Mad ( if you can bother with all the ads for Russian prostitutes and "you wont believe what you see at airports")

Most of their support on there now seems more pragmatic about living within their means. Its been a long tome coming.

Craving success is an affliction that supporters of all clubs has ( including our own) (I recall being in non League saying I would never moan again if we got our League place back, but of course now we all want more) but has been a more consistent issue for the Nottingham Clubs. Forest still have visions of being back competing in the European Cup ( as it was back 40 years ago) .In reality , history tells us they are, right now, where they belong.

County fans still seem to persistently think , having USED to be the worlds oldest professional league club, ( sign still up I believe ) having a bang average decent ground and some bloke called Sirrel, entitles them to at least a place in the Championship.
Some, like vote chasing Greenwood, even think (somewhat pathetically) the old tag they have just lost should give them some special dispensation with the football authorities to help with the issues they and other clubs like Bolton and Bury have. Shes petitioning the Football League. Breaking news for her. County aren't in it any more. If they go to the wall (and i hope not) its really sad, but no different to if it happened with any other club. They should be treated the same .That's fact.

Fans of both Nottingham clubs have relentlessly pursued their owners to keep changing managers until they get what they want. Munto was lauded for buying a place in League 1, as was Hardy for threatening to do so until a year ago. Bath time was inevitable. Living beyond their means, encouraged by a small deluded fan base.
Forest have spaffed millions chasing an elusive dream to be as good as Leicester or Derby. I havn't researched it , but both clubs must have changed more managers than any other in the last 10 years.

Morons at the Nottingham Evening Post calling the city the Capital of Sport don't help. Never has been, never will be.

So it s all a bit rich pretending the blame isn't theirs to a certain degree. It is and right now they are where they belong. Weak owners caught along for the ride believing the hype the fans have spouted.

Most Stags fans have no real beef with County, certainly not in the same league as Chesterfield ( although they are, ho-ho !). Its been this superficial superiority complex with a chip on both shoulders that most of their fans carry, that makes many here enjoy their demise to the 3rd team in Nottinghamshire. They blame, Munto, Trew, Hardy, Fullerton, Nolan, hapless Ardley ( at least 15 other managers ) and the tealady. Time to look in the mirror. The old fella now retired who used to commentate for them, had the same affliction. (Not a disgrace losing to us any more, is it?)
Even now, if they get saved and start next season , many of them will be demanding a management change come November if they are not top.

I hope they survive and get a decent owner and have a nice steady 5 years down there in the abyss which might help the fans gather a spot of humility along the way.

I agree buying the club at the asking price makes no financial sense when it can be bought out of admin for far less.

I agree Dan, and the sad thing is most of their fans are quite down to earth people. Dare i say it: 'normal'?! :P

Then (as you say) there is the bell-end class of fan, who sees them as the Man Utd of lower league and have a divine right to march up the league while everyone quakes in their majesty or bows humbly at their history. I honestly think these are the ones who've been the first to KO at the players, managers, staff, etc without giving a moment's thought to the root cause of the problem. They were probably the instigators in demanding 3 managers in a season, and part of why they're in this hopeless mess. Of course Hardy dug the burial pit all by himself, but i suspect they were the ones goading him to keep spending at any cost because their egos couldn't handle inferiority (ie - reality! ;)).

Most, if not all, clubs have this sort of character, but (comparatively speaking) they seem to have it in extraordinary abundance

The latest is that Hardy has cleared his desk at Meadow Lane and the Danes are waiting in the wings. And, on this news, certain posters on Notts County Mad are having a pop at The Stags. I do have sympathy for the genuine Notts Fans. Not sure why these certain individuals are having a pop though. Perhaps it's because they are about to lose their free tv licences?

They have a pop at us because they're jealous. They absolutely hate the fact that we're a football league club, a club a league above them, a club going places, a club doing really well both on and off the pitch, a club with it's own superb training facilities etc etc etc

There are some Notts fans who I talk to who are really top lads (& lasses) who are more than happy to admit all the above & wish they were more like us. But then there's the knob-jockeys who think by saying we're all inbred, only got 3 sides & not many fans makes them better than us.

You'd be surprised at just how many Notts County fans think THEY'VE got the worst fans around.
