If we still play three centre backs, CJ could find himself relegated to a bit part player. We had a big chance to cash in in January supposedly, I can't see him getting in ahead of Mal and White or Cook and Maynard so where does that leave him now?

I would play CJ as much as I like Mal, hes better suited to a back 4, Donahue would drop back left when CJ is pushing forward

Why is no one mentioning any of our youth players in the starting 11? Do you all hate our youth set up? You all disgust me

Will depend on preseason games. Cook is not ahead of Rose so far based on the games but several games to go yet. I'm not sure Donohue will have played enough in preseason to start at Newport.

If Rose doesn't hit the ground running he could be gone by the end of the window. If CJ gets a half decent bid it may be time to ship him out and get two in for the season.

The players emerging from the youth set up have to force themselves into first team reckoning and give JD some hard choices to make. These friendlies are the ideal opportunity. Also throughout the season in reserve games they have to be ‘knocking on the first team door’. Too early yet for me to select a first team XI. After the Forest game for me.

Why do people on stagsnet disgust you? What is wrong with you? Shall we call you a doctor for you? Do you need help?

Great to see that there’s two or three players from the bench I’d be happy to see in the starting team, shows we’ve both got a bit of strength and depth and the ability to switch tactically.

I’ll look to predict a team when I’ve seen a bit more of preseason. I’d say we may need and extra centre back to play 3 at the back? Maybe a couple of the younger players can cover that off?

For me you’d start with the usual back 5 and build from there, if you can’t fit CJ into his preferred left position I’d be tempted to use him off the bench as an impact player even though that feels a waste of his talents

The youngsters that have impressed me so far are Noah Stokes, James Clarke and Tyrese Sinclair.

Hope we get to see Tyrese today.

Agreed about these three but Noah Stokes looks like hes going to be out a while after Thursday. Don't think Sinclair is physically ready for 1st team yet, but definate prospect and would be good to see him play at least some of today. Clarke looks most likely to be the one to figure this season. Looks reasonable cover for White

CJ n White on the same wing unballanced side I would have CJ as Sub hurting a tired Newport in the last 20 minutes.

What ever Dempster does, he’s got to show some balls and drop CJ to bench, if he doesn’t fit into the formation. Not like Flitcroft where second half of last season, CJ was playing 3-4 different positions in a game. My own personal opinion, is CJ is better as a impact sub, with his pase and energy, he’ll cause more damage when opposition is tired.

The thing with the Cook signing for me is that Rose has some true competition which could spur him on hopefully. There’s a decent player in there. Also inversely Cook has to perform too. The only player imo without competition is Maynard and we needn’t worry about him. I’m happy with the squad so far.

I agree. We should definitely play 4-4-2, and I would choose this line-up based on the current squad. I still think we need a 'midfield general' though (instead of Khan - who could be an effective sub if he doesn't start).

wow tts sam clucas all over again. You build a side around your best players, simple as that. CJ is an asset and one of the biggest attacking threats in the league and you want to bench him? Hes got to be starting on the wing... the formation comes after that.

Play your best players when they're performing in their best position ( what flit croft got so wrong)
Build a team from the back, we've got a cracking defence already.... these are the two things most managers get wrong.

You have to decide which formation to play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2.

If it is 3-5-2 then there does not appear room for both Benning and Hamilton

If it is 4-4-2 then there does not appear room for all three of Preston, Pearce and Sweeney.

It would be easy if we could pick 12 players to start games.

Or we play rush keeper and have one of the CB as keeper.

It's ultimately up to JD. However, as the old football cliche goes, it's a nice problem to have.

Having said that just like at this point last season I am still having concerns about our squad depth at the back. However we are at a point where that can, and probably will, be rectified.

Good strong competition for places is a good thing to have.
