I have just seen that Danny Williams has died. Now he deserves a minute's silence or applause.

Danny preceded Smithy. A lot of the players for the side of 74-75 were brought in in Dans last season and I think he recommended Clarkey to us also. Smithy made them all tick like a well fettled Rolls though. :D

How many players did Danny Williams sign that were part of out great Division 4 Championship side under Dave Smith in 1974-1975? Kevin Bird, Jim McCaffrey, Paul Matthews, Rod Arnold, Terry Eccles, John Lathan etc. I think Colin Foster, Mick Laverick and Barry Foster all came up from the youth team at this time as well.

Dave Smith added Ray Clarke and Gordon Hodgson and off we went for a tremendous four seasons from 1974-1978.

RIP Danny, my memories are of a manager who liked his teams to attack and always played with the old fashioned wingers often 4-2-4 at home

He was manager when I went to my first match, too. Home to Southport, October 1972. Losing 3-1, then drew 3-3. Thanks, Danny.....you got me hooked.

Rest easy Danny, my first game Boxing Day 1973 v Lincoln City, absolutely jammed onto the Quarry Lane End. 4-3 victory. As Syd says above....I was hooked.

Sad news that.

Condolences to family.

'The best uncapped wing half in England' was the accolade given to him by sports writers of the day to the former Yorkshire miner during 15 seasons with Rotherham Utd (620 appearances). Managed Rotherham, Swindon, Sheff Weds then Mansfield Nov 1971-March1974 and then back to Swindon.

Acknowledgement to Stan Searl Mansfield Town 'A complete Record 1910-1990'

ps further looking into Stan Searl's book took me back to going to Cambridge Utd 28th April 1973 where lost 3-2. We were up twice in the game and we didn't go up to the old Div 3 (we won 2 out of the last 10 games btw) and Cambridge did.

When you look at the players Danny Williams signed you have to admit he had an eye for a quality player. He built the foundations of the best squad we have ever had.

My first match without a parent,we were top that season then slumped to eventually finish sixth after that loss at Cambridge.

Should have took the hint of what Stags were gonna put me through for the next 47 years.

I'm pretty sure there is some footage of the Cambridge game on You Tube. I had a look but could not find it.

Brilliant Martin.

What a graceful player Paul Matthews was and a fantastic diving header from Dudley Roberts.....and, of course, my all time favourite player on the wing.

Paul Matthews now you're talking,do people remember those metal badges you could buy with the players photo on them?I had his. I bumped into him walking towards Field Mill a few seasons ago,he's aged better than me,he must have been on a spaceship for the last 47years.
