Yep, good reading. It proves we’re probably a goal scorer short as mentioned in another thread.
We’ve had enough shots on target to have an extra 2/3 goals which given our draws would probably mean another 4/6 points.

Definitely need that striker or get ours scoring more from the chances we get. I suppose the midfield must chip in too!!!

Expected Goals (XGs) are an attempt to measure how many goals a team should have scored based on the chances created and the probability (difficulty) of scoring from those chances. Each type of shot or header is given a value of between 0 and 1 goals based on how many shots of that type are required to score a goal on average.

"A simple way to think about the Expected Goals value is as the number of goals a team “deserved” to score, if we lived in a world where all players were equally skilful and we had perfect information about the shot."

The XGs for Mansfield Stevenage were Stevenage 0.6 Mansfield 1.8 which suggests the Stags should have won 1-2 or 0-2 based on chances created.

The XG for Bury v Tranmere was Bury 1.3 Tranmere 1.7 which suggests Tranmere were unlucky to lose 2-1 at Bury.

The data is fairly rough at times as I am sure the people concerned do not watch the videos of all the games to analyse the quality of the chances being created. However it can be useful to identify whether a team were lucky/unlucky, playing against a below or above average opponent or playing better/worse than previously.

The data does tend to show long term patterns. For example, if a team is conceding a high number of XGs but still managing to win then it might suggest they are having a bit of luck. However you would not expect this to continue in the long term and therefore their results could start to decline. The D3D4 people were talking about this in respect of Peterborough when they were unbeaten and top of League 1 and sure enough Peterborough's results started to drop off. It was only a matter of time before opposition sides converted more of the XGs being created.

Mansfield are only 10th on XGs conceded at home with an XG of 1.38 so we do give the opposition a chance to score at Field Mill. We have only conceded 5 goals from 10 matches which might suggest this trend cannot continue in the long term or that our keeper/defence has been performing above average in saving/blocking shots or that the opposition has been wasteful when given a chance to score.

Lincoln have the best XGs conceded at home score with 0.6 but they have conceded 13 goals in 12 home games. Tranmere Rovers have only conceded 4 goals at home but have an XGs conceded at home score of 1.8. Blooming statistics!

However Tranmere keeper, Scott Davies, is in the InStat League 2 team of the season with the top rating for League 2 keepers so perhaps it does make sense after all. InStat say "The stopper has kept nine clean-sheets this season while also making 38 saves that are classified as “super saves” meaning the shot had a high percentage chance of going in." Bobby Olejnik was not far behind.

0.6 to 1.8 is a ratio of 1 to 3. So a scoreline of 1-3 looks pretty reasonable, and anything but harsh!

Top Attacking Players in Premier League and EFL

Tyler Walker and Danny Rose both get a mention although both should be scoring more goals based on chances. Danny is clearly doing well to make the chart based on his limited starts. Tyler Walker seems to be 3rd on chances for League 2. Nicky Maynard (Bury), Sam Surridge (Oldham-on loan from Bournemouth), James Norwood (Tranmere), Jayden Stockley (Exeter/PNE) and Paul Mullin Tranmere) are all above average at the moment. Chuks Aneke (MK Dons) should be out on top but clearly needs to work on his finishing. Ollie Palmer also gets in there.
