'It was out of character' - Danny Cowley defends Luke Waterfall as he accepts defender's ban
By Mark Whiley, 8 MAR 2018

Danny Cowley says Luke Waterfall regrets the “crazy moment” which led to his dismissal against Mansfield and subsequent suspension.

The Lincoln City skipper will sit out the next three games, starting at Chesterfield on Saturday, after receiving a straight red card in the aftermath of Ollie Palmer’s last-gasp equaliser.

Waterfall was dismissed after hurling a bottle, which had been thrown by a Stags supporter, back towards the stand.

Speaking ahead of the game against Chesterfield, Cowley said the incident was out of character for the popular defender.

“We have to accept the punishment,” said Cowley. “When you score in the dying moments against your local rivals, emotions can get the better of you. We’re human beings and none of us are infallible.

“Luke regrets the incident and we have to live and learn. Fortunately no-one got hurt, we have to accept the three-match ban and move forward.

“It’s not ideal to lose our captain for three games and with two local derbies coming up.

“Luke’s as disappointed as anyone but I’m not into kicking people when they’re down.

“It was so out of character for Luke. He’s a lovely boy and is a credit to this football club. It was just a crazy moment and he’ll never do it again, that’s for sure.”

I was nearly hit by the bottle, it was full and thrown with some force...had it hit a kid or elderly unawares it could have been a very different outcome...

Surprised at the 3 game ban, not seen many players throw anything into a crowd, nevermind a full bottle with lid on...I thought the kiosks took the lids off to stop them being used as projectiles

Don't mention the lids, they'll start confiscating them again :)

3 match ban seems very lenient.

Yes the ban does seem a bit lenient when you add in the way he behaved towards the officials when he was sent off. I think 3 matches for the throw is about right but he should have got at least another two for his behaviour afterwards. Not very often players have to be escorted off by stewards and then went back for more. Maybe the ref was still trying to sort Palmer out to notice.
Who are you calling pedantic? I resemble that remark!

3 match works out well really, apart from him missing the game against the sheep next week. The other two games he misses are Grimsby and Morecambe. Following game is Exeter and I'd rather he be available for that.

Fair enough, the biggest concern is the Amoeba who threw it on the pitch to start with. Mansfield through n through....Plank!

I'd like to know how they smuggle a live octopus past security, shirley they have someone checking bags and suspicious packages in todays climate, what with ISIS suicide squads etc.

in 2001 Inter Milan fans smuggled a moped into the ground, tried to set it on fire, then threw it from the upper tier.

More discussion of the Mansfield v Lincoln game and the Luke Waterfall bottle throwing incident on BBC Radio Lincs from Saturday.

Quite funny when the BBC Lincs pundit, Steve Thompson, shouted from the stand "Can you chuck me up a bottle of water Luke". Luke saw the funny side but Danny Cowley didn't.
