Why would we change it to a loan then?
No idea on the logic. Could JR be thinking there may be a bidding war if DJ does well?
It could be Walsall refused to match his current wage, so we pay DJ, that's how loans work and Walsall pay us what has been agreed between the two clubs.
They had agree a 2-year deal with him. JR pulled out of the deal last minute and changed it to a loan. I can only imagine as others have said that they hope that he scores a few and there’s a bidding war for him in January. Also worth noting that both our games against Walsall come before January so he can’t play against us.
Also yes sometimes clubs don’t pay the full wage amount, but also sometimes pay a loan fee - so it works both ways.
Seems a strange thing to do !Why would JR get involved? Yes he is the owner, but surely that type of decision would be best made by NC.

Might not have been JR, could have been Sharpe. Clough will identify if he wants a player, or not in this case. Then up to Sharpe/ to negotiate on fees for buying and selling, with JR having the final say. Looks like in this case he possibly wasn’t happy with the finances.

I think the fact that we play them twice before his loan expires is a good thing too!
If he's banging in goals for them, it significantly weakens them against us.

Not many clubs want to sell their striker. Well we did.
All you need is a bust up or a team higher up signing another striker and making one good enough for us to be made surplus to requirements.
There's still ~5 weeks of the window left. Plenty of time left still to see what happens.

The
No surprise there. Amazing what having a natural goal scorer in your team can do.

Honestly the reaction to this from some stags fans is ridiculous. Opening game of the season and the crybabies are out in full force. A hat trick for him doesn’t suddenly make it the wrong decision.

No it doesn’t your correct but you don’t let a goal scorer go without getting in a adequate replacement..

What does it make it then ?..I do get baffled sometimes with the Manager's decisions..Johnson out a proven goalscorer , Swan in ,a kid, who hardly got a kick today

If you can’t work out after last season Johnson was never going to work here then I dunno what to say, him scoring a hat-trick with a total distance of 5 yards between them all does not change that. He’s a good poacher but it’s not enough for our side, and it may not be enough for Walsall but it’s going to take time to find that out.

You make it sound like it's a bad thing signing players from higher leagues
Other teams will let strikers go, if they can get another player in to replace them. To say no one is gonna let a striker go a week before the season starts is daft, we literally just let one go on loan..
We’ve let a striker go who’s barely kicked a ball in anger for us hardly a key first team starter and it’s a wage off the books for 6 months . And nothing wrong with a loan striker if he’s going to improve what we have .
That is absolute nonsense..Johnson is a proven striker and will score goals for Walsall this Season..We have an unproven kid from Forest who has to make the grade into mens football

No end were slagging DJ off on this forum last year. Now he’s gone and done well he never should have been allowed to leave.
The same happened with Andy Cook last year.
Sometimes things don’t work out or a player doesn’t fit into the squad as initially hoped. That’s football.

Johnson wasn't particularly a proven goalscorer for us.

Pretty sure this happened with Jamie Reid and Andy Cook last year, early goals and then a drop off. Maybe DJ will carry it on and it will work for him at another club.

A bit like DJ last season.
I hope he does score goals for them and becomes an essential part of their team, that way we may get a larger amount of money for him.

I don’t think Johnson was given much of a chance here for whatever reason.
He made a nuisance of himself and wound defenders up to the extent of bookings and even a sending off.
I would have expected him to have been given a run in the team following his injury with a chance to get back up to speed as most favoured players are, but that never happened. Everyone knew he would leave the club but not why.
There may have been a legitimate reason but we’ve never been enlightened and I guess we never will be.

Clough has let Johnson go on loan and replaced him with Swan. That is the only salient comparison.
... Not looking a wise decision so far.

Swan is not the replacement for Johnson, we will sign another striker.

We may well sign another striker and I sincerely hope we do. It’s a fact though that Johnson was not available to help our club in the opening league match and neither was any possible replacement. He scored a hat trick for a rival team and in anyone’s book that cannot be good planning.
I don’t think Johnson has any future at MTFC no matter how well or poorly he does for Walsall and I don’t have a clue why that should be so. We will never know.
