And it’s not Johnson , DJ has scored the goals for Walsall, as we all know
You could play Swan on one wing. He is fast, can pass, control, and cross
Who does the other wing ?
Akins - can cross but slow
Oates - Other than Nov/Jan last season, seems to now not be able to control/pass/control ball
Gordon - On wing could be an answer
Bowery - Maybe
4-3-3 with DJ
Or
5-3-2
Other Johnson and Macca RWB/LWB
Maris Clarke Reed
DJ and one other
If he stays I think DJ could score us some goals, depends on NC set up
I think Macca and Johnson (C) will continue to be the width, with or without Johnson (D), and regardless of formation. The signing of Reed probably points to that.
I agree Mark. So looking like possibly 5-3-2 at home and 5-4-1 away. DJ or no DJ
When you think you know the answers, I change the questions

I wouldn't rule out 4 at the back, a lot of the better teams play 4 at the back and get their width from the old fashioned full backs getting forward - they just have a bit more holding midfield cover, which it seems like Reed is made for. I'm fairly sure we only went to 5 at the back this season, and primarily to cover the lack of pace of our centre halves, so if we're playing Hewitt and Kilgour as centre halves then it feels like the pace problem has been solved. Obviously, I might be wrong.

As much as I like Oates he isn't scoring, whilst I appreciate he has had a long lay off, how long do you give him? particularly when DJ has been netting regularly.
Swann has got a fair few so him & DJ up top for me. No time for sentiment.
Akins joining us has been a mistake in my opinion, a massive disappointment, bench at best if I was picking the team.

He was a duff buy dress it up as much as you want it was a duff buy either by clough or whoever bought him
Johnson is not the problem though ,does that make it clearer for you
Johnson has been the biggest white elephant signing in years.

Oates is scoring. He has 3 goals in 9 games since returning from injury.

He will go. He needs to go sooner than later on the premise that the replacement needs to come in and train

Are you sure?
Cloughie said in his interview with Danny coming back it's like having a new player.
Unless it was a bluff to try and get his price up.

yes.
Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags:
“It has been a quiet few days, it always is over the weekend.
“We are just waiting now in terms of the outs if there is any interest or offers for any of our players.
“I think getting the three in we have and Danny returning, it's like four new players and we are quite happy with that.
“If there is a wild card one that crops up we will look at that.
Mark Stevenson: "So you might just be looking at one (potential incoming)?"
Clough: “I think so yes. If the squad gets healthy in terms of injuries then I think just one.
“But if it isn't one then that's just fine too. We think we have three good players in and Danny coming back.
“Obviously we will have to see what happens with Danny as well but I don't think there is anything immediate with him at the moment. As far as we're concerned he is back in the squad.”
Mark Stevenson asks about Clough's meeting with Danny Johnson.
“The meeting went fine. Danny understands there are 20 games to go. If nothing is agreed with another club then he will be with us.
Mark Stevenson asks "are you expecting him to stay"?
“You never know what might happen with a week still to go in the window. It's a little bit up in the air and out of my hands certainly.
"But as things stand he will be in the squad on Saturday."

Alan Nixon on twitter in response to
Danny Johnson to Hartlepool, chances?
...says
Mansfield want a fair old fee.
On 10 Jan, Alan Nixon said

Doesn't make sense that it's "not that much" 2 weeks ago and now it's "a fair old fee", unless Nixon meant originally that it's not that difficult. Either way, feels like the club are going to get the best of either world - if we get a 'fair old fee' for a guy with 5 months left on his contract then great, or if the 4th top scorer in the league plays for us for the next 5 months then also great. The only downside is if DJ downs tools - and I imagine being out of contract ahead of a good move salary-wise might make him want to put a little bit less in.

I suspect his valuation has gone up after we found out the other player we wanted’s valuation was too much.

Just saying that we obviously had our eye on an an attacking player and that he seems to have turned out to be too expensive and that means we need to keep DJ.
It would then make sense to increase the asking price on DJ to an amount that would help towards the fee needed to sign the expensive replacement if we end up needing one.
Not sure if I’ve worded that very well

I get what ya mean...
We may have had a valuation for DJ , gone in for another player and been shocked at how high that players valuation was and thought , Hold on we aren't asking enough here for DJ..
These are my opinions , if you don't like them I have others...

Or maybe another club has offered a much higher fee and DJ is refusing to sign for them, preferring to go to Walsall instead.
In that case I’m sure most clubs would ask Walsall to match the other offer.

I'd have thought the asking price has gone up to Walsall as they are now a play-off rival too, Flynn has done a good job there but will have been weakened by DJ going. Sellers prerogative.

Wouldn't it be something if he did stay, was a permanent fixture in the side and scored a dozen goals.
