Himself and his recruitment teams fault two transfer windows they have had and it’s there for all to see we are terrible defensively. It’s a good Job Clough isn’t managing higher up the football pyramid because his tenure would certainly be questioned..

What can you do?

"Get better players"

Who's to blame for missing out on three key targets?

He's signed players at derby and Burton who didn't come as good as he had hoped and was always quick to call them out and get them moved on. Never sugarcoats it

He is brutally honest but criticising his own players week in week out is one reason they won’t play for him. They deserve to be totally hammered but obviously he’s not getting through to them .

the buck stops with him, we all knew what was needed, he has failed to sign 2 CB, his players , his formation his responsibility

Yeah, but he's clearly identified 3 key targets and the club has failed to get them. It's a collective issue.

One signing we all know is Naylor, the other name ingot told I thought was a bit too ambitious but don't know the truth to it. And the third was the lad who went to Burton.

You could put O'Keefe at right back, and replace both centre backs with just Menayese and it would improve the defence immeasurably.

He has tried to sign quality, if they don't want to come or their clubs won't release then, what is he supposed to do ? He thought he had got Naylor, then right at the last minute he decided to go elsewhere. Naylor not signing was a blow. I do think Hewitt was a poor signing thogh.

O'Keefe currently the leagues best right back and what we've all seen from Rollin shows he's better than what we have. Strong quick and alright on the ball. Walsall seem to like him

I mean, of course O’Keefe would want to stay if we recalled him. After the way he was ostracised.

rochdale fans love him.

Sounds like a great decision to let him go and bring in someone who’s been relegated twice in a row and can’t kick the ball straight

Agree. He says personnel isn’t good enough but they’re his players, he chose to keep them or sign them in the summer and the ones he’s let go like o’keefe look better than what he’s chosen to keep.

If personnel aren’t up to it you’ve got to look at formation. I was hoping with Stirk and Maris they would screen the defence but no such luck. Maybe play 3 centre backs or admit we can’t defend and go for the keegan philosophy you score 3 and we’ll score 4?

He does seem to have been hasty with one or two players, making them aware that he doesn't rate them before he has the replacement lined up. It would have been wiser to keep them until the replacements have proved their worth on the pitch. Maybe the ostracised players just couldn't get on with him? I'm sure that Menayese didn't get a fair chance. IIRC he played one game for Clough, did reasonably well but then was let go anyway.

The 3 centre halves we missed out on were Naylor (who went to Wigan), Piergianni (who stayed at Oldham), and Hughes (who went to Burton).

There was a player who was a back up to Naylor but signed for another club a few days before Naylors medical after being told we were set to sign Tom and everything was agreed.

if so, then that was a 4th target. Clough has talked again today about missing out on 3 centre halves, and he is referring to the 3 I listed. If there was a 4th target, then maybe he had his reasons for not saying 4 targets, I don't know.

I think that's a bit harsh. The club was badly let down by Naylor and his agent.

Maybe so, but seemingly he was putting all his eggs in one basket which with his experience is naive at best.

The fact the defence is in the state it’s in currently is ridiculous, it’s not acceptable.

It needs to be rectified with utmost importance and urgency

The 2 main problems last season were goalkeepers and strikers, the signings of Hawkins and Bishop are to be commended.
He said in the interview they were the only 2 he would of kept on the pitch at half time, it's annoying so many good players are not performing to their capabilities, lapslie is a strange one.

Which is one thing we all expect not to happen with an experienced manager..

I do find it funny, and its quite the forever entitled stags fan view that we just expect every transfer window to be the best ever and we've never thought of the possibility that something like this could happen... I think this time with Clough though we were right to expect him to get it right.
